Xfinity Series Boyd Gaming 300 Review

At the NASCAR Xfinity Boyd Gaming 300 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kyle Busch drove to victory for the second straight weekend, at a track were the stellar driver had yet to record a Xfinity Series win. Not only did Busch cross Las Vegas Motor Speedway off on his racing resume’s bucket list, but he also won on his hometown track. The Las Vegas native led 199 of the 200 laps and had enough of a lead to hold off his hard charging teammate Daniel Suarez to bring home the glory.

The win was Busch’s second straight Xfinity Series contest and broke an 0-11 streak at the track. Even though the numbers show that Busch dominated most of the race, the last 15 laps were anything but easy. Daniel Suarez and his ARRIS Toyota Camry appeared to be the quicker of the two hot rods in the closing laps of the race. Suarez fell about two laps short of catching Kyle Busch and finished second just .817 seconds behind.

“Suarez was definitely faster than us when he got clean track. If roles were reversed, he would have been pulling away from me, and I wasn’t going to be able to catch him. All in all, just a great day for us in 1-2-3, and for me to get a victory here in my home town, check one off the list, that’s pretty awesome.” Busch said in victory lane.

The day might have belonged to Kyle Busch and his NOS Energy Toyota Camry, but Joe Gibbs Racing once again stood out as the premier team with its three drivers finishing first, second and third to end the day. Erik Jones who also is a teammate of race winner Kyle Busch and runner-up Daniel Suarez took third.

Jones appeared to have the fastest of the three cars throughout the Xfinity race but back-to-back pit road speeding penalties had Jones consistently playing catch-up from the back of the field. He went two laps down when he was flagged for speeding on pit road and got nailed again while serving his pass through lap for the original infraction. Jones claims it was faulty calibration on the warning lights that let the drivers know when their speed is excessive.

Lap 136 of the Xfinity Series event brought out the race’s largest wreck that ended the day for Darrell Wallace’s fast driving Ford and fellow competitor Justin Marks. The melee ensued when Cody Ware spun his #25 Chevrolet into the outside wall and came to rest sideways in the middle of the track. Wallace went low to avoid Mark’s car and crashed into the rear quarter-panel while Ware tried to go high and rammed the right side of his vehicle into the outside wall.

The Xfinity Series Boyd Gaming 300 took two hours and four minutes to complete. There were only three cautions that resulted in 15 laps under the yellow flag. There was only two lead changes on the 1.5 mile oval. Kyle Busch led every lap except lap 55, that lap was led by Darrel Wallace Jr. Kyle Busch received the Coors Light Pole Position award and fellow teammate Erik Jones took home the Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors. Joe Gibbs Racing received the MAHLE CLEVITE Engine Builder of the Race.
