South Region Dark Horses
Hawai’i
The Rainbow Warriors are the lowest seed here, with one of the most difficult draws in the first round. However, Hawai’i is plenty capable themselves. Conference POY Stefan Jankovic can score inside and out, while Roderick Bobbitt is a prime candidate to become a household name by the end of the weekend.
Wichita State
Woof. Congrats on the season Arizona, now you get to possibly face one of the most experienced backcourts in the history of the tournament. If the Shockers get by Vandy in the play-in game, they’re going to be a popular pick to upset the Wildcats in Round One. If they do, they could get Miami in the Round of 32. Not a great match-up, but certainly not one they can’t win and get back to the Sweet 16 with.
UConn
One of the most purely talented No. 9 seeds we’ve seen in recent seasons. The Huskies are so electric when they’re on their game, but so predictable when they aren’t. It all comes down to whether or not they can get controlled, mature play from Sterling Gibbs and Rodney Purvis, while letting Daniel Hamilton go to work and Jalen Adams come in to provide a spark. Kansas being the top overall No. 1 has to feel a bit unlucky having to possibly deal with them on the first weekend.
Iowa
I know, the Hawkeyes have been brutal to close the season. We knew they’d come back to Earth a bit, but I don’t know if anyone saw it being this brutal to watch. Still, Jarrod Uthoff is one of the most dynamic players in the country, and if they get by Temple, they could give Villanova a ton of problems should they play well.
