After eight seasons in Palo Alto, and another missed NCAA Tournament, Jonny Dawkins was fired from his position of head men’s basketball coach on Monday morning. The Cardinal finished this season 15-16, 8-10 after winning the NIT one season ago.
For all of Dawkins’ successes with recruiting, which we detailed here, he’s never been able to get Stanford truly on track within the Pac-12 Conference since it added Colorado and Utah. Sure, they’d reached four straight postseasons until this year, but aside from a surprise Sweet 16 run with his most talented roster, Stanford had yet to make any national noise under Dawkins.
A name you’ll see mentioned a lot for the Stanford job is Russell Turner, UC Irvine head coach and a former Mike Montgomery assistant

Stanford fires Johnny Dawkins. Interesting to see if they go into NBA and pull former Cardinal Mark Madsen (LAL) or Jaron Collins (GSW)

Looking at possible replacements for Dawkins, one has to wonder whether or not the administration will stick within college basketball or go to the pro ranks. Recruiting to Palo Alto is not difficult whatsoever, meaning that the program needs someone who can maximize the production out of that talent.
