Faced with their first NCAA Tournament game in more than 50 years, the Yale Bulldogs looked like the veteran, physical team most expected Baylor to be. It proved to be just enough for the newcomers, as they put the first true upset of the tournament in the bank.
Down six with 3:01 remaining in the game, senior Taurean prince hit a contested lay up inside to pull his No. 5 seeded Baylor Bears within four points.
Yale led by as many as 12 points in the second half, using a tough minded and scrappy inside-out approach to battle with the taller, stronger, and more athletic Baylor frontline. But Scott Drew’s team wasn’t done, losing ground after Prince’s lay up before watching him hit a step back three with under 1:30 remaining, once again cutting the lead to four points. A steal from Ishmail Wainright led up a Jake Lindsey bucket and Yale’s lead cut to 72-70. But free throws from Makai Mason and an ensuing charge foul on Prince ultimately proved to be too much for Baylor to overcome, despite a continued rally that saw Prince hit yet another three, bringing BU within 76-75.
Yale will meet Duke in the Round of 32 on Saturday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. Yale, in their first NCAA Tournament since 1962, hadn’t won a game in the Dance since 1949.
For Baylor, it’s the second straight season they’ve been upended as a heavy favorite in the first round, as they lost on a buzzer beater a year ago to Georgia State. Not to mention, things got a little chippy between two veteran teammates.
