While this NCAA Tournament hasn’t had many upsets after the first weekend, our eventual NCAA national champion will have had to deal with a surprising amount of chalk once they finally cut down the nets in Houston.
All things considered, North Carolina beating five-seed Indiana isn’t far off from the way that things are theoretically supposed to play out. Beating Indiana 101-86–with the game not being nearly as close as the final score indicated–is what was surprising though, showing the nation why North Carolina’s best is still better than anyone else’s.
Roy Williams’ entire starting five scored 14 or more points, with senior point guard Marcus Paige finally finding his shooting stroke–he hit 6-of-9 threes in the game–and Brice Johnson recording another double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
With all due respect to Notre Dame, it would be a huge upset if the Irish knocked off UNC to make the Final Four. Sure, they did beat the Tar Heels in their only regular season meeting by four in South Bend, but Carolina took our their anger in the ACC Tournament, winning 78-47.
North Carolina seems to be peaking at just the right time while Notre Dame has squeaked by two games in a row that they arguably should have lost. If UNC plays anything like they did on Friday night, we could be seeing Williams grab his third title in Chapel Hill.
