Our EPL recap starts with Leicester City. Their unlikely march to a Premier League title continued with another big win on Sunday as an unlikely hero provided the lone marker in a 1-0 win over Southampton. Manchester United found a way to top Everton 1-0 in the lone other match scheduled for Sunday but the two goals combined seemed just a little underwhelming after six of the eight games on Saturday included a combined four goals or more. Here is a look at our EPL recap and the individual performances by position from this past weekend in the Premier League.
GK: Ben Foster, West Brom
West Brom bounced from a 1-0 loss to Norwich by earning a point on the road at Sunderland thanks in big part to the play of their goalkeeper. West Brom didn’t have a single shot on target in the draw, but Foster made six saves to help them preserve the clean sheet in easily the most impressive performance of the week by a Premier League netminder. West Brom has now moved up to sixth in the English Premier League standings. They have allowed 37 goals in 31 games this season.
Honorable Mention: Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea; David de Gea, Manchester United
D: Wes Morgan, Leicester City
Among defenders, our EPL recap focuses on Morgan. In a game where Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were unable to find the back of the goal, it was the most unlikely of heroes that broke through for Leicester City. Morgan got Leicester City on the board in the 38th minute and that goal proved to be the game-winning marker in a 1-0 win over Southampton. Leicester City’s lead has now ballooned to seven points as they lead second-place by seven points. We’ll see if they can hang on to that lead down the strech of the season.
Honorable Mention: Hector Bellerin, Arsenal; Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea; Christian Fuchs, Leicester City
M: Pedro, Chelsea
The Blues continued their unbeaten run with a lopsided 4-0 win over Aston Villa to climb in to ninth in the Premier League table and Pedro was easily their best player in the victory. Pedro scored twice on as many shots on target to ice the victory with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Alexandre Pato scoring the other two goals for Chelsea. Although Chelsea had a disastrous start to the season, they have now moved into 10th place in the EPL standings. We’ll see if they can continue to climb as the season comes down the home stretch.
M: Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal
Manchester City and Arsenal were the other two Premier League clubs that registered 4-0 wins on Saturday with Alexis Sanchez starring for the Gunners in their victory over Watford. Sanchez scored a goal and added an assist with four shots on target in the lopsided win as Arsenal maintained its position in third spot in the table.
Honorable Mention: Jonny Howson, Norwich; Manuel Lanzini, West Ham; Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool
F: Aleksander Mitrovic, Newcastle
While Morgan was the unlikely hero for Leicester City, Mitrovic was the unlikeliest of players to make an appearance on this list heading in to the week. The 21-year-old striker came off the bench for Newcastle and scored twice in the final 20 minutes of regulation to give his side a fighting chance before Martin Olsson’s goal in extra time made the difference in a 3-2 win for Norwich City. Mitrovic’s effort to salvage at least a point for his side fell just short but he still wound up as the top fantasy forward in the Premier League for this past week.
F: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City
Sergio Aguero led the charge up front for our EPL recap. He had a great effort for City in its lopsided win, scoring the final of three goals in the first 20 minutes of action versus Bournemouth. Aguero is up to 17 goals in 24 games for City this season with four total shots to round out his fantasy score from this past weekend. City has now registered 56 goals for in just 31 games this season. That’s the second-most goals in the EPL this season.
Honorable Mention: Bojan Krkic, Stoke City; Anthony Martial, Manchester United; Harry Kane, Tottenham
