Now that Josh Pastner has left for Georgia Tech, it’s time to look at the various Memphis head coaching vacancy options that have started to float around college basketball circles.
Who’s getting the most love for the job? A Memphis native, the mid-major ranks’ most sought after name, and a Duke assistant known to be one of the nation’s best recruiters.
If Pastner does get Ga. Tech, it will be interesting to see names that pop up for Memphis: Gregg Marshall, Penny Hardaway, Jeff Capel, etc.

Is Penny Hardaway going to be the next Memphis coach? #MemphisEast #Treadwell #HSBB #FAB50 #AsTheWorldTurns

What a time to be alive. Penny Hardaway is a Memphis legend, who has been involved with the local AAU scene for the past four years, particularly with the Nike EYBL series, considered by most as the top league for prep prospects to compete in. While he isn’t an alum, you won’t find someone more revered locally than him.
Gregg Marshall has been among the two most coveted names in the mid-major ranks in recent years, but would he really leave Wichita State? And Jeff Capel, though he didn’t find much success at Oklahoma, has reinvented himself at Duke under the guidance of Coach K.
