As the NCAA Tournament comes to a close, GMS likes to review some of the power conference or power program teams that made it to the Big Dance and ask whether or not they’ve got a shot to return to the show next season. We kick things off with teams eliminated in the first round.
Recruit and Reload:
Key Losses: Isaiah Whitehead (NBA Draft)
Key Returners: Desi Rodriguez, Khadeen Carrington, Angel Delgado
Key Newcomers: Myles Powell (four-star)
Breakdown: If Whitehead doesn’t sign with an agent and chooses to return to the Pirates, you’re talking about potentially a top 15 team to start the season. Last year was the turning point for Kevin Willard and it would be a shame to see that get halted so suddenly.
However, it’s not like their roster will be bare. The core three of Rodriguez, Carrington, and Delgado that they return should be one of the best in the Big East, plus they’re adding Powell, who was pursued by much of the Eastern Seaboard. Adding Whitehead into the mix would simply make this team Villanova’s top challenger in the conference next season, and a team that would have a chance to even improve on last year’s end of season run.
