In EPL fantasy this week, we saw Leicester City continue its unlikely march towards a Premier League title with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland. That stretched its win streak to five over the weekend. Tottenham remained within seven points of top spot with a win of its own but time is certainly not on the side of Hotspur heading in to the final stretch of the season. Here is a look at the top EPL fantasy performers by position from this past weekend
GK: Wayne Hennessey, Crystal Palace
While Leicester City and Tottenham continued to fight for points at the top of the table, Crystal Palace took an important step towards avoiding a bottom three position with a 1-0 win over Norwich City that pulled them 10 points clear of the relegation line. Hennessey made four saves to preserve the clean sheet victory and edge out Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris for top EPL fantasy honors at his position this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City; Hugo Lloris, Tottenham
D: Toby Alderweireld, Tottenham
It wasn’t just his steady defensive play that earned Alderweireld top EPL fantasy honors at his position this past weekend. In addition to strong work at his own end to help preserve the clean sheet victory over Manchester United, Alderweireld marked his name on the score sheet with a goal in a crucial 3-0 win that has Tottenham soccer fans thinking the Premier League title race isn’t over just yet. We’ll see if they can make this interesting, even though it has mostly been a one-horse race this season.
Honorable Mention: Joel Ward, Crystal Palace; Alberto Moreno, Liverpool
M: Erik Lamela, Tottenham
Lamela was the star in the midfield for Hotspur and earned top fantasy honors at the position with a goal, an assist and three shots in the win over United. Lamela has just four goals and six assists this season so Tottenham fans are hoping that his best soccer is yet to come down this final stretch of the season. Tottenham is in second place in the EPL standings, but are seven points of the pace. At this point in the season, that’s significant.
M: Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea
Swansea extended its undefeated streak to three games and ended Chelsea’s unbeaten streak in the process with a 1-0 win thanks to Sigurdsson’s lone marker in that game. Sigurdsson’s goal in the 25th minute stood as the game-winning goal as Swansea remained in the picture to finish in the top-10 in the table. Swansea has 40 points on the season, which ties them in the EPL table with West Brom.
Honorable Mention: James Milner, Liverpool; Alex Iwobi, Arsenal; Jason Puncheon, Crystal Palace
F: Andy Carroll, West Ham United
Carroll looked like a man possessed in EPL fantasy over the weekend with three goals on 10 shots. The veteran striker put West Ham in position to earn an important three points with the hat trick but they couldn’t hold on as Arsenal stormed back with Laurent Koscielny scoring in the 70th minute to tie the game at 3-3 and force the draw. It might not have been enough to get the win but Carroll’s hat trick and 10 shots was clearly enough to make him the top fantasy performer of the week regardless of position. West Ham is now sixth in the EPL standings with 52 points in 32 games. They’ve scored 52 goals so far this season, which is the fourth-most among EPL teams this season.
F: Jamie Vardy, Leicester City
It was a familiar face playing the role of hero for Leicester City over the weekend as Vardy scored twice in a 2-0 win over Sunderland. The two goals and five shots probably would have been enough to earn top EPL fantasy honors at his position most weekends but it finished second to Carroll’s unbelievable effort this past week. Leicester City is now seven points clear of second place with 72 points on the season. They have now scored 57 goals in 33 games this season, which is the third-most in the EPL this season.
Honorable Mention: Divock Origi, Liverpool; Graziano Pelle, Southampton; Shane Long, Southampton
