Elizeu dos Santos TKOs Omari Akhmedov in Round 3
An entertaining, competitive affair between Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Omari Akhmedov ended in a vicious third round TKO.
Early on, both Elizeu and Omari were tentative on the feet, but engaged in some impressive scrambles on the mat. Elizeu consistently attacked the legs of Omari to sweep back up to the feet and avoided having Omari’s top game. He found himself in trouble though with an Omari kimur attempt. Both men displayed some slick ground exchanges. Strong leg kicks and knees to the body broke Omari down. By the third round, Omari’s gas tank was running dangerously close to empty and Elizeu turned it on. Stiff jabs, knees to the body, and classic wading-and-trading forced the stoppage in the third round.
Very impressive performance by Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos!
Cezar Ferreira Outworks Bamgbose for UD Win
After 15-minutes of action, “Mutante” Ferreira scored the hard-earned unanimous decision win over Oluwale Bamgbose.
Cezar Ferreira had to undergo some adversity in the first round when a lunging right hook put Ferreira on the mat. Oluwale was close to scoring the finish, but Cezar managed to survive and get back up to his feet. From there, Ferreira was able to stay on the outside and avoid Bamgbose’s wild blitzes. In the second round, it was clear that Ferreira was the fresher man and he knew it. He scored a takedown and smothered Bamgbose for the entirety of the round; crushing Oluwale with elbows and punches from the guard. By the third round, neither man had very much left in the tank, but Ferreira stayed cautious and avoided a few wild flurries. Ultimately, Ferreira captured the 2-1 decision.
John Dodson blitzes Gamburyan for Quick Finish
It didn’t take long for Dodson to show off his speed advantage in his 47-second TKO victory over Manny Gamburyan. Dodson clipped Manny with a double left straight and followed it up with about 15 consecutive punches on a defenseless Gamburyan. Manny had no answer and seemed completely overwhelmed by the speed of Dodson. With this win, the question becomes “how long will it take for Dodson to get a title shot?”
In case you forgot, John Dodson won his season of The Ultimate Fight by knocking out TJ Dillashaw. While TJ isn’t the champ anymore, it’s still a big win to have under his belt. Current champion, Dominick Cruz, will be squaring off with Urijah Faber at UFC 199. While I don’t think Dodson will get the next title shot, I’d like to see Dodson face a top 5 opponent. If he gets that win, I see no reason why he shouldn’t battle for the title shot next. In fact, TJ Dillashaw doesn’t have an opponent scheduled for him, but the upper-echelon of the division is booked. Unless an injury forces an opponent out, I wouldn’t be surprised if John Dodson took on TJ Dillashaw next.
Recap:
What a triplet of fights! We saw a brilliant display from Elizeu dos Santos as he TKOd Omari Akhmedov. Then, the extremely entertaining and unorthodox Oluwale Bamgbose looked good in the first round, but ran out of gas and got smothered by Cezar Ferreira. Lastly, the bantamweight return of John Dodson could not have been more dominant. He left everyone wanting to see him take on the bantamweight’s elite. Will Dodson’s speed overwhelm the stronger, bigger opponents? We will see.
