EPL Fantasy: Week 35 Recap

Leicester City continued its push towards the Premier League title with a lopsided 4-0 win over Swansea City over the weekend as a number of key players stepped up with Jamie Vardy sidelined. Leicester City wasn’t the only team to secure important points over the weekend though as Sunderland received an outstanding performance from its goalkeeper in a key draw versus Arsenal as they fight to remain above the relegation line. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performers by position from the Premier League this past weekend.

GK: Vito Mannone, Sunderland

Sunderland earned another important point with a 0-0 draw versus Liverpool as the club continued to tread water above the relegation line and Mannone was a big reason for it. Mannone stopped all six shots he faced to keep the Gunners off the board and secure his third clean sheet in his last four starts. Sunderland is currently tied with Norwich City at 31 points with three games to go and there is no doubt they will need Mannone to continue to perform at an elite level if they are going to remain in the Premier League beyond this season.

Honorable Mention: Petr Cech, Arsenal; Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City

D: Jeffrey Schlupp, Leicester City

Leicester City’s improbably run towards a Premier League title continued with a 2-0 win on Sunday with Schlupp delivering an assist while helping to keep Swansea to just a single shot on target in the win. Schlupp made his first start since November 7th and his second point of the Premier League season was enough to give him the edge over Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta and Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno as the top MLS fantasy performer at the defender position this past weekend. Leicester City has been killing it in terms of EPL fantasy this season and have now scored a healthy 63 goals in 35 games this season.

Honorable Mention: Pablo Zabaleta, Manchester City; Alberto Moreno, Liverpool

M: Ashley Westwood, Aston Villa

Aston Villa suffered its 25th loss of the season on Saturday to fall further back of Newcastle United for the worst record in the Premier League but Westwood delivered nonetheless with the top EPL fantasy performance at his position. Westwood scored two goals with three shots on target in a losing cause but those that had him locked in to their roster in Daily Fantasy Leagues had to be happy with his performance. Villa has been a disaster in reality and EPL fantasy as they are dead last in the table and are assured of relegation.

M: Eden Hazard, Chelsea

Chelsea bounced back from consecutive losses with a lopsided 4-1 win over Bournemouth thanks in big part to a brilliant performance in the midfield from Fabregas. The veteran Fabregas ended a three-game point drought with three assists in the victory to edge out Southampton’s Dusan Tadic and his teammate Cesc Fabregas on this list of the top performers of the week in the Premier League. Chelsea has now moved up to ninth in the EPL standings with 53 goals in 34 games this season.

Honorable Mention: Dusan Tadic, Southampton; Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea; Adam Lallana, Liverpool; Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City

F: Kelechi Iheanacho, Manchester City

The 19-year-old striker Iheanacho led the way up front as Manchester City continued its battle for one of the top four positions in the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Stoke City. Iheanacho scored two goals and had five shots in the lopsided victory and only narrowly edged out Leicester City’s Leonardo Ulloa for the best EPL fantasy performance at his position.

F: Leonardo Ulloa, Leicester City

It was Ulloa that stepped up with Jamie Vardy absent due to suspension over the weekend as the veteran striker scored two goals for Leicester in its 4-0 win over Swansea. Leicester is now within striking distance of completing the most improbable title run in league history and Sunday’s win provided yet another example of unlikely heroes stepping up in another important victory.

Honorable Mention: Shane Long, Southampton; Papiss Demba Cisse, Newcastle United; Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool
