Golf Recap: This Weekend’s Results From Around The World

It took an extra day to round up the results from around the golf world as steady rains in New Orleans, Louisiana resulted in the Zurich Classic being delayed until Monday. The playoff was as unspectacular as the first four rounds although it was pretty impressive to see a veteran golfer find a way to outplay some of the best golfers in the world to earn his first-career PGA Tour victory. There was also a pair of first-rime winners at the European Tour and LPGA event as well including an unlikely victor emerging at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout with world No. 1 Lydia Ko sitting that tournament out. Here is our golf recap of the results from around the world this past weekend.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans

PGA Tour

We start our PGA Tour golf recap with Brian Stuard, who delivered following a rain delay that pushed the two-hole playoff at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to Monday. Stuard birdied the final hole of the final round to sneak in to the playoff along with Jamie Lovemark and Byeong-Hun An and it was his steady play that made the difference in the tournament. Stuard never bogied a hole and that trend continued in the playoff where he came out on top to claim the $1.26 million prize. The victory came after more than 4.5 inches of rain fell throughout the tournament and delayed the outcome until Monday. Stuard had never finished higher than a runner-up finish before on the PGA Tour but the victory gave him a substantial payday and a two-year exemption that will also allow him to play in majors. Other notables include Jason Day tying for fifth at 13-under while Rickie Fowler finished tied for 20th at 8-under. Day was the biggest disappointment in the field. A lot of people had him to win outright and he simply fell short. He still cashed for those that took him with the Top-5 prop.

Volvo China Open

European Tour

It was only fitting that China’s Hao-Tong Li delivered with a big win at the Volvo China Open over the weekend. Li began the final round two shots behind Felipe Aguilar and Lucas Bjerregaard but vaulted past them with a bogey-free 64 to earn his first European Tour victory. Li began the week at No. 237 in the world but it didn’t matter as he was the third-highest ranked Chinese player and had no problem delivering in front of his home fans. Aguilar recorded a runner-up finish at 19-under while Bjerregaard finished tied for third at 18-under along with Marcel Siem and Rich Bland.

Volunteers of America Texas Shootout

LPGA Tour

Our LPGA golf recp begins with the fact that world No. 1 Lydia Ko took the week off and skipped the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout. That created some buzz with a wide-open field contending for the victory at the Las Colinas Country Club. Jenny Shin took advantage to capture her first PGA Tour win with a two-stroke victory over Gerina Piller, Mi Jung Hur and Amy Yang. Shin closed with a 14-under 270 to finish at 4-under 267 for the tournament in her 123rd-Career PGA Tour start. The third-round leader and local resident Piller birdied the final hole to finish tied for second.
