Lucha Underground S2E11 Recap: Trios Tournament Begins

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week’s episode of Lucha Underground featured another night where both championship titles were defended. Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico defended the Trios Championship against the Disciples of Death, and managed to come out victorious in an elimination match. To main event the evening, Matanza Cueto absolutely destroyed Pentagon Jr. in a dominant, and successful, Lucha Underground Championship title defense.

In non-title bouts, Mariposa, Marty “The Moth” Martinez’s sister, defeated a shaken Sexy Star. Sexy Star was kidnapped by Martinez and Mariposa, and even though she escaped, it is unclear what happened during her capture. Whatever did happen, however, has caused Sexy Star to almost have a panic attack whenever she sees Mariposa. Along with that match, Mr. Cisco and Cortez Castro defeated Johnny Mundo and Taya in a tag team match (thanks to the help of Cage).

Tonight features the beginning of the second Trios Tournament, where the winners will go on to face Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico. Also, Fenix has a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity where he will take on Matanza Cueto.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto approaches Vampiro backstage regarding Matanza Cueto’s attack on Pentagon Jr. (Vampiro’s apprentice) last week. Dario Cueto says that Matanza went too far in his attack, and that he needs Vampiro on commentary for a big main event.

Ivelisse vs. Kobra Moon
Kobra Moon debuted recently, and is undefeated since her debut. She has had two impressive victories over Bengala and Sexy Star. Ivelisse is another veteran in the Temple, having won the Trios Championship twice, and she is currently in her second Trios Championship title reign.

Kobra Moon gets in some good systematic offense, but Ivelisse gets the better of her, hitting the Code Red (running sunset flip powerbomb) to pick up the victory, and to end the undefeated streak of Kobra Moon. Winner: Ivelisse

Video Package
We get a little background on Killshot, who used to be enlisted in the military as a sniper (hence the name). He has come to the Temple to fight to forget his time in the military, when he was captured for thirteen months, and when his brother went missing.

Backstage Segment
Mascarita Sagrada is training when he is approached by Famous B, who gives Sagrada a business card, claiming that he will make Sagrada famous.

Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro, & Mr. Cisco vs. Marty “The Moth” Martinez, Mariposa, & The Mack – Trios Tournament Match
Ryan and Castro are working as undercover cops working on a case against Dario Cueto, so winning the Trios Championships can get them one step closer to their goal. Their opposing team is a strange combination, however. Last week, Martinez beatdown the Mack after he tried to help Sexy Star, so The Mack has some beef with his Trios partners. Perhaps he could put that aside and focus on the titles, but he is definitely a combustible element in this match.

The Mack and “The Moth” don’t see eye-to-eye, leading to The Mack hitting Martinez with a stunner. Joey Ryan takes advantage and pins Martinez for the victory.

After the match, Mariposa starts attacking The Mack but Sexy Star comes down to the ring to make the save, and mercilessly attacks Mariposa.

Backstage Segment
Rey Mysterio is with Dragon Azteca Jr., and Mysterio reveals that they have a Trios Tournament match next week, along with their partner, Prince Puma.

Fenix vs. Matanza Cueto (c) (w/Dario Cueto) – Lucha Underground Championship
Fenix defeated Mil Muertes a few weeks ago to win his first Lucha Underground Championship, but lost the title the following week after Matanza pinned half of the participants (including Fenix) in Aztec Warfare to win the Lucha Underground Championship in his debut.

Matanza defeats Fenix with barely any effort, ending the match with the Wrath of the Gods. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza Cueto

After the match, Matanza continues the beatdown on Fenix, but he interrupted by Catrina, and attacked from behind by Mil Muertes, who sends Matanza out of the ring.
