I have not seen an episode of Ring of Honor, but just like recapping WWE and Lucha Underground, I want to cover as many wrestling promotions as possible on Get More Sports. Since Ring of Honor has been around so long, it will not be possible to recap all of it like Lucha Underground, and we will have to just jump right in with the current episodes. What is also notable, is that the television episodes are aired in advance. This episode, for example, was aired in February.
Ring of Honor is an independent wrestling promotion that has been around for over a decade, and has produced some of the greatest wrestlers in recent memory. Ring of Honor saw the early stages in the careers of Samoa Joe, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Austin Aries, and AJ Styles just to name a few.
Ring of Honor has done some cross-promotion with New Japan Pro Wrestling, and it shows here since this episode features NJPW talent, and they are in Japan for this episode.
Moose, Michael Elgin, Tomoaki Honma, & Hiroshi Tanahasi vs. The Bullet Club (Tama Tonga, Cody Hall, Bad Luck Fale, & Yujiro Takahashi)
The Bullet Club is a familiar name to recent viewers of WWE, since it is the faction that AJ Styles, Luke (Doc) Gallows, and Karl Anderson were a part of in New Japan Pro Wrestling. They have pretty much taken over the wrestling world with all their members atop the top promotions. One of their members, Cody Hall, is the son of WWE Hall of Fame inductee Scott Hall.
Elgin, Honma, and Tanashi work together to keep The Bullet Club at bay while Moose hits a spear on Cody Hall to give his team the victory. Winners: Moose, Michael Elgin, Tomoaki Honma, & Hiroshi Tanahashi
Pay-Per-View Rewind
Lio Rush became the “Top Prospect” by winning a tournament, which would guarantee him a Ring of Honor contract and a World Television Championship opportunity. Since the Television Champion would have commitments in Japan, at Supercard of Honor, Lio Rush would have the rare opportunity of taking on Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion Jay Lethal. Rush would take Lethal to the limit, but Lethal would end up retaining his title.
After his victory, Lethal claims that there is no one left that is worthy of a title shot, and to respond to that claim is returning Ring of Honor veteran, Colt Cabana.
The following night, Lethal would grant a title shot to Cheeseburger, and would retain his title yet again. Colt Cabana would come down to the ring after the match to challenge Lethal to an impromptu non-title match, resulting in a victory for Cabana. Because of this win, Colt Cabana would be granted an opportunity for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Global Wars Pay-Per-View.
The Bullet Club (Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson) vs. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe
As stated above, this episode was taped in February, so during this time Karl Anderson and Doc (Luke) Gallows were still under Ring of Honor contracts. WWE fans know that now they are signed with WWE, and have been featured in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship storyline with AJ Styles and Roman Reigns.
Jay and Mark Briscoe have seen plenty of success in the wrestling world. Together, they have held the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Championships 8 times, as well as the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championships twice along with Toru Yano. Mark Briscoe has not found singles championship gold in Ring of Honor or New Japan, but Jay Briscoe has won the Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship on two separate occasions.
After Jay Briscoe hits a lariat and a neckbreaker on Karl Anderson, Mark Mriscoe hits the Froggy Bow (diving elbow drop) on Anderson to pick up the victory. Winners: Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe
This Sunday (May 8) is Ring of Honor Global Wars, a live iPPV event which will be highlighted by Jay Lethal defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Colt Cabana.
