Khan’s Glass Head Edition – In this the 8th edition of the Talk ‘n’ Shoot Boxing podcast host Miguel Iturrate gets into the aftermath of Saturday’s big HBO pay-per-view featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking on Amir Khan.
Alvarez started out slow and appeared to get frustrated in the early going as he was having trouble catching up with Khan. late in the sixth round “Canelo” found himself within range and he fired a big right hand that landed on Khan’s chin and sent him to the canvas hard. It was apparent from the serene look of calm and peace and Khan’s face as he lay there that he was not getting up. The sigh of relief that could be heard was the vast Mexican audience who back “Canelo” fervently. Khan managed to silence them the first few rounds.

A lot is going to depend on how well this pay-per-view did for “Canelo”. A good number of sales, say 1 million buys, means that Alvarez will feel comfortable in his role as the number one draw in boxing. The Golden Boy Promoters and Alvarez have already revealed the name of David Lemieux as a potential next opponent, and to add to the speculation Lemieux was given a showcase spot on Saturday’s pay-per-view.
But if the numbers are low for this pay-per-view Alvarez is really going to have to re-think who his next opponent is going to be. By all accounts, Khan is a bigger draw than Lemieux, and if that fight did not sell well the expectations for a match with Lemieux may be low. Lemieux is 35-3 now and he has 32 knock outs to his name so the promoters must think that is a good start to promote the fight. But if the Khan sales are low, then there may be an opponent upgrade that is due.
In order to score the big, satisfactory fight for everyone involved, Alvarez must fight Gennady Golovkin, Triple “G” next. Though Golovkin is developing as a true box-office draw, his reputation as the number one middleweight in the world would sell the match easily with out any of the negative side to it that other opponents would bring. Canelo, let’s make it happen.

Despite the one punch knock out that put Khan’s weak chin on display again, we are going to see Khan again and we will see him in big fights again. In the immediate aftermath of the fight Khan was taken to the hospital, but that was for precautionary reasons. Khan was lucid and fine talking to reporters the following day.
Khan stated in an interview that appeared on Boxing Pride that he felt his stock was elevated by the whole experience. He came and fought a bigger guy, he took a risk, and it did not go his way. Khan will go back to the welterweight division and he will be looking for a big-money fight. At the end of the day, nothing Khan does is done without clearing it through the Premier Boxing Champions and advisor Al Haymon. The number one fight interesting Khan right now appears to be a re-match with Danny Garcia, the WBC welterweight champion who defeated Khan in July of 2012.
