NBC Boxing Saturday Odds Review – The UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois hosts the Premier Boxing Champions this coming Saturday, June 18th as they put on a full night of fights that sees the main events air on NBC in the United States.

The main event is a rematch over 12 rounds with Juan Carlos Payano again risking his WBA world title at bantamweight as he faces Rau’shee Warren again. The pair met for the first time last August, and the controversial contest ended in a split decision victory for Payano. The two judges that had the fight for Payano had it 113-111, but Warren was deducted two points in round nine for shoving in a match that at times got ugly. Earlier in the fight Payano had a point deducted for pushing down on Warren’s head, and many observers felt he continued to do it throughout the fight. The referee’s work that night almost certainly affected the outcome, thus the rematch has been almost a year in the making. The line for this fight is ultra competitive, as would be expected.

In the 154-pound super welterweight division, undefeated Dominican prospect Erickson Lubin (14-0) is considered to be in a showcase bout here as he faces veteran Daniel Sandoval (38-3). Lubin is just 20 years old and this will be just the fourth 10 rounder of his career, but his talent has many people thinking he is slated for big things. Sandoval is still just 25 years old despite having over 40 pro fights under his belt, and he has only taken one loss in the last five plus years, so look for him to provide a test for Lubin. Sandoval last fought in the United States back in 2013 so he is a bit of an unknown quantity, but he will be looking to make the bookmakers that have him as a four figure underdog eat crow.

At Light Heavyweight, Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara, who resides in Chicago and figures to have a huge local contingent backing him, is a huge favorite over rival Joe Smith Jr. Fonfara is currently ranked #2 in the world at 175 pounds, and he has been fighting top flight competition for the past several years. In 2015, he took out Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and he defeated England’s Nathan Cleverly in a fight of the year candidate. As for Smith Jr, he is taking a major step up in competition, as the Long Island native has built up his fine 21-1 record mainly on fights he was favored in. This is also the farthest Smith Jr has strayed from home, and he will certainly feel being on the road against Fonfara, who brings a huge ethnic Polish backing to his fights in the Chi-town area.
