Some of the best in the world will make their way to the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship. We took the time to break down the field for this week’s event in order to build a roster with the perfect combination of star power and sleeper value plays. Here is a look at the optimal lineup for this week’s DraftKings PGA fantasy tournaments.
Patrick Reed, $12,200
Reed tied for 11th in Rio at the Olympics and has now finished in the top-15 in five straight tournaments including the Open Championship, the PGA championship and the Travelers. Now he gets an opportunity to extend that run at the Wyndham this week where he has finished in the top-25 in each of his last two starts. Reed actually won this event back in 2013 when he beat Jordan Spieth in a two-hole playoff and with each of the top four golfers in the world sitting this one out it makes that much more sense to roll with Reed as our top pick on the board.
Jimmy Walker, $10,000
The newest major champion will tee off this week for the first time since he won the PGA Championship at Baltusrol a couple of weeks ago. Walker should be brimming with confidence this week and while he hasn’t played at Sedgefield since 2013 he did finish tied for fourth here in 2012. Walker will be looking to keep the momentum going heading in to the playoffs and at $10K he is actually still available for a very reasonable price in DraftKings tournaments.
Robert Garrigus, $7,700
Garrigus has recorded five top-25 finishes in his last eight events including at the John Deere Classic and the Travelers Championship. Garrigus has delivered throughout his career at Sedgefield including making the cut in five of six starts here including a career-best tie for 11th back in 2013. Garrigus is a decent value play at under $8K so it makes sense to use him in this spot.
Graham DeLaet, $6,900
DeLaet impressed at the Olympics when he was among the early leaders and ended up finishing with a 69 to end up finishing in 20th place. Now he will make his first trip to this event since 2012 when he recorded a top-25 finish. DeLaet is currently seeded just inside the top-125 and that is important because a strong finish this week could lock him in to the playoffs and earn him another year of eligibility on the PGA Tour. DeLaet has the potential to contend for the outright win at the Wyndham Championship this week and at under $7K he should be an excellent value pick on DraftKings.
Martin Laird, $6,900
Laird finished tied for fourth in the first Wyndham Championship to take place at Sedgefield and he added a 14th place finish here a couple of years ago in 2014. He will look to extend his strong run at this tournament this week where he is five-for-five in making the cut. Laird is coming off a pair of top-10 finishes at the RBC Canadian Open the Barracuda Championship. However, it’s worth noting that around those two performances, he has a pair of results where he tied for 62nd. We are banking on a quality finish in this case.
Morgan Hoffmann $6,300
Hoffmann is in the midst of a relatively disappointing season but he did record a T-3 at the John Deere Classic after a closing 71 last week. He has made the cut in two of the last three years at the Wyndham Championship. We’re hoping that the performance last week really boosts his momentum as he has been very inconsistent this year. He has missed the cut in five of his last eight events but also has a tie for 11th and a tie for 44th in that span.
The combination of his decent results at this tournament and the fact that he could be rounding in to form following a poor start to the year makes him an intriguing sleeper pick. That’s especially true considering we can plug him in to the final spot in our DraftKings lineup at just $6.3K. We don’t need a Top 10 finish from him; just a made cut would be nice.
