There was certainly plenty of scoring around the Premier League this past weekend with Manchester City extending its perfect record with a big win while a veteran striker delivered one of the top fantasy performances of the weekend in a losing cause. Meanwhile, a familiar face came back to haunt Chelsea once again as the Blues dropped their second league game in a row. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.
GK: Petr Cech, Arsenal
Cech once again proved to be a thorn in the side of his former club, stopping both shots he faced to pick up the clean sheet win over Chelsea. It was the second loss in a row for a Blues side that had opened the season with a point in five straight games, while the Gunners continued their climb in the standings with a fourth straight victory.
Honorable Mention: Artur Boruc, Bournemouth; Fraser Forster, Southampton
D: Hector Bellerin, Arsenal
Bellerin also did his part from the back end for Arsenal, registering an assist on one of the Gunners’ three goals. The single point combined with a clean sheet bonus was enough for Bellerin to record the top fantasy score among Premier League defenders this past weekend. Arsenal has scored 15 goals so far this season, which is third-most in the EPL.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Bertand, Southampton; Daley Blind, Manchester United
M: Adam Lallana, Liverpool
Lallana led the way up front for Liverpool with a monster performance in their 5-1 win over Hull City, registering a goal and two assists. It was the top EPL fantasy performance of the weekend in the Premier League regardless of position, and it was a big reason why Liverpool has climbed to fourth in the Premier League table as the Reds have now won three in a row. Liverpool has been a great source of offense in terms of EPL fantasy. They have tallied 16 goals so far, which is the second-most in the EPL. Only Manchester City has managed to find the back of the net more times than them.
M: Heung-Min Son, Tottenham
Son delivered for Hotspurs with a pair of goals including the game-winning marker in a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough to earn a spot on this list. Son now has four goals and an assist in his last three games for Tottenham, and it should be no surprise that his side has won all three of those contests. Tottenham is currently is second place in the EPL standings on 14 points. In terms of EPL fantasy, they have been a solid option to consider for goalkeepers and defense as they’ve allowed just three goals so far (through six games). No other team in the EPL has allowed that little.
Honorable Mention: Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal; Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool; James Milner, Liverpool
F: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City
Manchester City extended its outstanding start to the season with a sixth straight league win on Saturday and Aguero was once again the star up front. Aguero had two goals including the game-winning tally in order to edge out his competition as the top fantasy forward for this past weekend. Manchester City is currently atop the EPL standings, holding a healthy four point lead. They have clearly been the best team in the Premier League through six games as their 18 goals scored are the most and their five goals allowed are third-best. They have a +13 goal differential, which is quite incredible when you consider that no other team is even in double digits.
F: Jermain Defoe, Sunderland
Defoe managed to find a spot on this list with two goals on six shots against Crystal Palace, but while it was enough to earn a spot among the fantasy elite it wasn’t enough for Sunderland to earn a win. Crystal Palace won the game 3-2, but Defoe still edged out Southampton’s Charlie Austin and West Brom’s Salomon Rondon with the second-best fantasy score at his position from this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Charlie Austin, Southampton; Salomon Rondon, West Brom; Christian Benteke, Crystal Palace
