The PGA Tour will shift to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this week for the fourth edition of the CIMB Classic, which is held as a joint Asian Tour and PGA Tour event. Experience will matter in the fourth renewal of this event at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club on the TPC Kuala Lumpur. The field for this week’s tournament is limited to just 78 players including the top Asian Tour players so we took the time to break down the numbers and figure out what the perfect cast is when it comes to fantasy competitions. It’s an interesting week to set our lineup as we’re paying big prices for some of the players who are normally in the second or third tier. That’s because we won’t see the big guns like Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day or Rory McIlroy. That means everyone else moves up the pecking order. Here is a look at the optimal lineup for this week’s DraftKings PGA fantasy tournaments.
Ryan Moore, $10,600
It’s worth noting that Moore is the fifth-most expensive option on the board for this week even though he won this event in back-to-back years in 2013 and 2014. Moore is also in excellent form after finishing last season with top-10 finishes in three of the four FedEx Cup events including a runner-up finish at the season-ending TOUR Championship. Moore’s recent form combined with the success he has experienced at this tournament make him the perfect PGA fantasy option for this week.
Gary Woodland, $9,600
Woodland was the runner-up to Moore in 2013 and 2014 and while he struggled here last year there is reason to expect a bounce back performance this week. Woodland is another golfer in excellent form heading in to this event after finishing with four top-25 finishes including two top-10 results in the four FedEx Cup playoff events. He finished in a tie for 10th at the TOUR Championship, 24th at the BMW Championship, 15th at the Deutsche Bank Championship and fourth at The Barclays. He’s got a chance to win this event outright and he could be in line for a big season and it will start at the CIMB Classic this weekend.
Russell Knox, $8,200
Knox won the final event he played in before the FedEx Cup Playoffs and then reeled off three straight top-25 finishes to close out the playoff calendar. The veteran golfer finished T-21st here a year ago in his first start at this event and there is a good chance he builds on that result with a better finish in his second start at the CIMB Classic.
Si Woo Kim, $7,900
Kim enjoyed his PGA Tour breakout with a win at the Wyndham Championship last year and he has produced some strong results since including a T-2nd at the K.J. Invitational and a T-10th at the Tour Championship. He’s had a couple of misses recently – he missed the cut at the PGA Championship, and The Barclays – but he’s finished in the Top 25 of every other event he’s played at (six of his last eight starts). The fact that he is available for under $8 K makes him an outstanding value play for this week’s PGA fantasy competitions.
Vijay Singh, $6,800
We considered James Hahn’s potential in this spot but ultimately decided to roll with what we feel is the safer option in Singh. The veteran Fijian will tee up in Malaysia for the first time since he delivered a T-21st at the European Tour’s Fiji International a couple of weeks ago and at under $7K he makes for a reliable sleeper option.
Danny Lee, $6,700
With just under $7K remaining for our final roster spot, Lee appears to be the perfect fit our DraftKings lineup. Lee delivered a T-13th at this event two years ago and while he was forced to withdraw from the CIMB Classic a year ago he is back and he is healthy right now. Lee is a bit of a risk but his potential makes him worth taking a chance on as another strong sleeper play for this week’s PGA fantasy competitions.
