There was certainly plenty of scoring across the board over the weekend in Spain’s top soccer division with plenty of teams scoring at least four goals or more. That led to some monster La Liga fantasy performances with a number of players delivering impressive scores at their positions. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.
GK: Diego Lopez, Espanyol
On a weekend where there was no shortage of scoring across the board, Lopez made sure that his team earned at least a point in the lone scoreless draw in La Liga action. Lopez finished with a ridiculous eight saves to steal the show as the obvious top La Liga fantasy performer at his position over the weekend.
Honorable Mention: Sergio Asenjo, Villarreal; Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona; Raul, Las Palmas
D: Marcelo, Real Madrid
Real Madrid had two defenders find the score sheet with Marcelo and Raphael Varane each netting one goal. Marcelo had the slight edge in terms of overall fantasy score thanks to the fact that he finished with two shots on target in the lopsided 6-1 win over Real Betis over the weekend.
Honorable Mention: Raphael Varane, Real Madrid; Inigo Martinez, Real Sociedad; Stefan Savic, Atletico Madrid
M: Yannick Carrasco, Atletico Madrid
Carrasco delivered a fantasy performance for the ages in Atletico Madrid’s 7-1 win over Granada and it was clearly the top fantasy performance over the weekend regardless of position. Carrasco netted a hat trick, scoring on each of his three shots on target, and added two assists to finish the game with five points. It was an outstanding performance in a lopsided win and left little double who the top La Liga play from this past weekend is. Atletico Madrid now sits at the top of the standings with 18 points. It’s still early in the season, but this is a very good start for them. They have scored 21 goals so far, which is the third-most in the Spanish Primera.
M: Roberto Soriano, Villarreal
Soriano shined the brightest out of all of the Villarreal players in their 5-0 win over Celta Vigo, scoring on each of his two shots on goal. There was plenty of lopsided results over the weekend and Soriano was a big reason why Villarreal is in that conversation. Villareal is now currently in fifth place in the standings with 16 points – the same amount as Barcelona.
Honorable Mention: Mario Suarez, Valencia; Ariz Aduriz, Athletic Bilbao; Manuel Trigueros, Villarreal
F: Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid
Ronaldo once again led the way up front in terms of fantasy score among La Liga forwards as he registered a goal and an assist with eight shots in total. A number of forwards registered multi-point games over the weekend but nobody fired more shots towards the goal than Ronaldo. Real Madrid continues to be a great source for La Liga fantasy as they have now tallied 22 goals on the season. That’s the second-best in the Spanish Primera.
F: Luis Suarez, Barcelona
Suarez was the star up front for Barcelona in their 4-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna, registering a goal and an assist with a total of five shots in the victory. It wasn’t enough to edge out Ronaldo for top honors at his position but it was the second-best fantasy performance among La Liga forwards for this past weekend. While Barcelona is still a great place to look for La Liga fantasy, it’s definitely surprising to look up at the standings and not seem them at the top of the charts. They are currently in fourth place – believe it or not – behind Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Sevilla. They are not far off the pace, though, as they have 16 points, which puts them just two points out of first. Their main issue has been their performance at the back end where they’ve already allowed 10 goals. Only three teams in the Top 10 of the La Liga table have allowed more than that.
Honorable Mention: Nicolas Gaitan, Atletico Madrid; Inaki Williams, Athletic Bilbao; Lionel Messi, Barcelona
