La Liga Fantasy: Recapping Week 10

It was a relatively quiet weekend in terms of goal scoring around La Liga with a number of low scoring games and clean sheet performances. Real Madrid were the biggest winners with a 3-0 win over Leganes while Barcelona also managed to clinch three points with a 2-1 comeback win over Sevilla. It should be no surprise that both teams are represented on the following list with Barcelona’s biggest star celebrating a career milestone in style. Here is a look at the top performers by position in La Liga fantasy this past weekend.

GK: Keylor Navas, Real Madrid

Navas turned aside all three shots he faced in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Leganes and that was enough to earn top La Liga fantasy honors at his position. Navas didn’t have to stand on his head in the victory but he was good when he needed to be and benefited from the clean sheet bonus he received in the lopsided victory.

Honorable Mention: Sergio Asenjo, Villarreal; Geronimo Rulli, Real Sociedad

D: Jaume Costa, Villarreal

Villarreal shut the door on Real Betis in a 2-0 win thanks in part to Costa’s strong defensive play but that wasn’t all he did as he contributed an assist in the victory as well. The clean sheet bonus helped put Costa’s stat line over the top as he finished with the best La Liga fantasy score among the La Liga defenders over the weekend.

Honorable Mention: Facundo Roncaglia, Celta Vigo; David Lomban, Granada

M: Willian Jose, Real Sociedad

Atletico Madrid were their own worst enemy in a 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad, conceding a pair of penalty kicks that were the difference. Carlos Vela got Real Sociedad on the board in the 54th minute and then Jose added another in the 75th to secure the victory. On a relatively quiet weekend for La Liga midfielders, Jose’s goal and four shots in total were more than enough to secure top La Liga fantasy honors at his position. Real Sociedad is now sitting in sixth place, which is respectable. They have managed to produce 19 points in 11 games so far this season and are eight points out of first place.

M: Jonathan Viera, Las Palmas

Las Palmas also secured a 1-0 win over the weekend when they shut the door on Eibar and they were very fortunate to clinch the three points after getting a late break. The game was scoreless in the 4th minute of second half injury time when Viera stepped to the spot and converted a penalty kick goal to put Las Palmas ahead for good. The late game-winning goal was more than enough to put Viera in the conversation as one of the top fantasy midfielders in La Liga over the weekend. Las Palmas has now dropped to ninth place in the Spanish Primera table. They have scored 21 goals, which is a healthy number for La Liga fantasy, though. That’s the fourth-most in the Spanish Primera so far this season.

Honorable Mention: Christian Santos, Alaves; Pablo Fornais, Malaga; Isco, Real Madrid

F: Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

Bale led the way up front for Real Madrid as he scored twice on a ridiculous eight shots, with six of them on target. The double helped make the difference as Real Madrid clinched its fourth straight league win and Bale earned top fantasy honors at his position with his teammate Alvaro Morata also earning honorable mention for his two points. Real Madrid is at the top of the standings table with 27 points through 11 games so far this season. Their 31 goals scored are the second-most in La Liga.

F: Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Barcelona was trailing Sevlla 1-0 towards the end of the first half when Messi provided the spark they needed when he delivered his 500th club goal to even the score at 1-1. Messi wasn’t done though, as just 16 minutes in to the second half he delivered a perfect ball to Luis Suarez, who buried what would be the eventual game-winning goal. Messi finished with a goal, an assist and six shots in total to secure the second spot on this list in another comeback win for Barcelona.

Honorable Mention: Alvaro Morata, Real Madrid; Luis Suarez, Barcelona
