This episode of Lucha Underground is the mid-season finale, before Season 3 returns in the summer. We are going to have to wait until summer for the Lucha Underground Champioship match between Johnny Mundo and The Mack, but tonight still has a pretty big card. Texano tries to get back on track after losing a potential “unique opportunity,” and El Dragon Azteca returns to take on the monster, Matanza Cueto.
Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office with one of his associates, and Cueto mentions in passing that the power of the gauntlet that Cage was awarded is actually going to be consuming him instead of the other way around. El Dragon Azteca Jr. storms into El Jefe’s office and demands a match against Matanza Cueto to get revenge for him injuring both Rey Mysterio and himself. Azteca not only demands a match, but he demands a deathmatch. Dario Cueto likes the sound of that, and schedules the main event.
Texano vs. Joey Ryan
Texano is coming fresh off of his Best of Five Series with Cage, which he would lose in Match Five. Before the Best of Five Series would end, Texano would be approached backstage by Famous B. Famous B suggested that Texano aligns himself with B to get that “it” factor.
Joey Ryan looks to use Texano’s rope as a weapon, but Famous B stops him. While Famous B and Joey Ryan are wrapped up with the referee, Brenda passes Texano a horseshoe. Texano hits Ryan with the horseshoe and steals the victory. Winner (via horseshoe): Texano
In-ring Segment
The Lucha Underground Champion, Johnny Mundo, is out in the ring with the Worldwide Underground. Mundo thanks his allies for being the only people to support him, then he turns his attention to The Mack. Last week, Mundo defeated The Mack to determine the stipulation for their inevitable Lucha Underground Championship match. Mundo decided for an “All Night Long Match,” which takes place throughout an entire episode of Lucha Underground, and is decided like an Iron Man match.
Johnny Mundo insults The Mack, saying that the challenger isn’t “built” to last the entire night. Mack has had enough, and he attacks Mundo from behind, then fends off the Worldwide Underground as well as security.
Veneno vs. Cage
Veneno is making his Lucha Underground debut, and it couldn’t be against a worse opponent. Cage is one of the strongest and most impressively athletic men in the Temple, and whatever powers that gauntlet has given him only improves The Machine.
Veneno gives an impressive showing, especially considering the Cage situation, but Cage says (quite literally) “enough of this,” then hits Veneno with the Jackhammer/Sit-out Tombstone Piledriver to earn the dominant victory. Winner: Cage
After the match, Sexy Star rushes the ring to attack a downed Veneno, after apparently figuring out that he was the one to give her spiders throughout the past few weeks.
El Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Matanza Cueto (w/Dario Cueto) – Deathmatch
As Matt Striker notes, the last time there was a deathmatch in Lucha Underground, it essentially ended the career of King Cuerno. After that match, and the only other one being between Pentagon Dark and Vampiro, this is only the third deathmatch in Lucha Underground history. The rules are pretty simple: anything goes, and excessive violence is encouraged.
El Dragon Azteca Jr. has been trying to get revenge on Matanza ever since he debuted. Matanza was the killer of the original El Dragon Azteca, and Azteca Jr. donned the legendary mask, and trained under Rey Mysterio to prepare for the monster. Azteca wants nothing other than to end Matanza, but Rey Mysterio did not agree with his vision, so the two went different ways.
Matanza and El Dragon Azteca Jr. fight to the top of the stands, and the match only ends when Matanza sends Azteca through the stairs and onto the concrete. Rey Mysterio returns for the first time in two months to check on his former protege, and he starts brawling with Matanza in the stands. Winner (via referee’s decision): Matanza Cueto
The brawl continues on top of the stands, and Rey Mysterio returns the favor by sending Matanza through part of the stands as well. Dario Cueto immediately demands that every gets out of the Temple, and that’s all we have for Lucha Underground until the summer.
