La Liga Fantasy: Week 21 Recap

The La Liga schedule was interrupted by a couple of games that had to be postponed, which left only seven games on the schedule this past week. However, there was still plenty of goals as four teams managed to score three goals or more in their respective wins including a pair of lopsided victories for Barcelona and Eibar. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position in the Spanish Primera this past week.

GK: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona

Barcelona’s goalkeeper was one of three at his position to register clean sheet wins over the weekend but his was easily the most impressive as he stopped all five shots he faced including a couple of tough stops. The game was never on the line but that doesn’t take away from an outstanding performance from the veteran netminder, who only narrowly edged out Espanyol’s Diego Lopez for top honors at his position.

Honorable Mention: Diego Lopez, Espanyol; Miguel Angel Moya, Atletico Madrid

D: Alexis, Alaves

Alaves managed to escape a tough test versus Sporting Gijon with a 4-2 win thanks in large part to the play of Alexis, who was actually solid defensively and contributed an insurance marker in the 85th minute. The two goals against hurt his final scorer but Alexis was still solid and ultimately he did just enough to earn top fantasy honors at his position. With the win, Alavaes now moves into 12th place in La Liga. They have 27 points and are just one point behind Las Palmas for 11th. Alaves has struggled at the offensive end as they have just 21 goals this year; only two teams have scored less goals than them.

Honorable Mention: Raul Navas, Real Sociedad; Florian Lejeune, Eibar

M: Sergi Enrich, Eibar

Eibar registered the most lopsided win over the weekend with four unanswered goals to blow away Valencia. Enrich led the charge with two goals on three shots including the game-winning goal to produce the top fantasy score in La Liga regardless of position this past week. It’s not often that Eibar makes our list for La Liga fantasy but Enrich did this week. They’ll now enter the week in seventh place in the Spanish Primera with 32 points in 21 games.

M: Paco Alcacer, Barcelona

In a relatively quiet weekend for La Liga midfielders, Alcacer delivered a good enough performance to earn top fantasy honors at his position. Alcacer opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 18th minute and his goal ultimately stood as the eventual game-winning marker. With the addition of a clean sheet bonus there was no doubt he earned a spot on this list.

Honorable Mention: Dani Garcia, Eibar; Aleix Vidal, Barcelona; Gonzalo Escalante, Eibar

F: Fernando Torres, Atletico Madrid

Torres opened the scoring for Atletico Madrid in the 15th minute and then added an insurance marker in the 51st minute to seal the 2-0 win over Leganes and solidify his place at the top of the list among La Liga fantasy forwards. It was a vintage performance from Torres and more than enough to earn the top spot on this list at his position. Atletico Madrid now enters the week in fourth place in the Spanish Primera. They have 39 points, which puts them seven points back of first place.

F: Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Messi made the list once again this week with a goal and three shots in total in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. It was a complete performance from top to bottom in front of the home fans and Messi did his part once again to secure the three points. As per usual, Messi is always one of the best options to go with in La Liga fantasy. As a team, Barcelona is now in second place in the Spanish Primera with 45 points (one point back of Real Madrid). They have been the most prolific offensive team in the league as they’ve notched 55 goals in 21 games, which is the most in La Liga.

Honorable Mention: Pablo Piatti, Espanyol; Edgar Mendez, Alaves; Juanmi, Real Sociedad
