Some of the best golfers in the world will make the trip to Mexico City, Mexico and the Club de Golf Chapultepec for this week’s World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship event. This year’s tournament will take place at a new location for the first time with 77 players competing in the event. It will be the first of the year’s four WGC events and there will certainly be plenty of jokes in regards to the President of the United States as the tournament moves from Doral to Mexico.
Event Details
Event: World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship
Category: PGA
Date: March 2-5
Location: Club de Golf Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mexico
When asked about the tournament being moved to Mexico, Rory McIlroy responded, “it’s quite ironic we’re going to Mexico after being at Doral. We’ll just jump over the wall.” While the Internet will certainly have some fun with the venue change, we will do our best to stick with golf in order to break down this year’s field and what to expect at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
Past Five Winners
2016: Adam Scott -12
2015: Dustin Johnson -9
2014: Patrick Reed -4
2013: Tiger Woods -19
2012: Justin Rose -16
What To Know About The Course
The Club de Golf Chapultepec is based at an elevation of nearly 7,800 feet, so we can definitely expect the ball to travel a great distance. Even still this isn’t considered a short-hitters course with three of the par fives listed at over 600 yards in length and a number of the par fours looking like they might be unreachable for the tee. Driving Distance will definitely play a major role in the outcome of this tournament but Accuracy is important too. With the weather not expected to have any impact this week, the top contenders will also need to make sure they take advantage when they find the greens with strong Putting statistics.
The Field
Dustin Johnson won this tournament in 2015 and he is the sports betting favorite to get the job done again this year at +650 odds to win outright. Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are in the mix as well among the betting favorites at +800 and +1000 respectively, followed by Hideki Matsuyama, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler. The defending champion Adam Scott is listed at +2200 to repeat as the outright winner here in 2017.
A Good Matchup To Bet: Adam Scott over Rory McIlroy
McIlroy will make his first start after he injured himself and playing with new clubs, we could see some early stumbles following the injury. Meanwhile, Scott is available at excellent odds considering he won this tournament a year ago. Even if he doesn’t win outright, Scott should be in the mix for a top-10 finish and that should be good enough to edge out a recovering McIlroy in this head-to-head betting matchup.
Top-Five Pick: Dustin Johnson
The best player in the world is two weeks removed from a dominant win at the BMW Championship and should be in excellent position to contend for another win this week at a course that is perfectly suited for him. Johnson is a long hitter that has incredible power off the tee and as long as he can sink his putts he should be in the mix with a top-five finish at the very least this week.
