For weeks, Lucha Underground has only been about one thing: The Cueto Cup. This week, the last four matches of the first round take place to finalize the competitors who are one step closer to a Lucha Underground Championship match. On the same night of the finals, Johnny Mundo will defend his title against Rey Mysterio, so the tournament competitors don’t know for sure who they will face at Ultima Lucha Tres.
Opening Segment
In a change of pace, this episode of Lucha Underground starts with Dante Fox going for a run in Boyle Heights (the city where the Temple is located). During the run, Fox gets a flashback to when he was captured in Afghanistan (he was in the military along with Killshot). He was tortured and almost killed, but US forces saved him just in time. He approaches the Temple and sees Killshot standing on top of it, and Killshot makes a gesture miming a gunshot pointed straight at Fox.
PJ Black vs. Sexy Star – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Dario Cueto is a good promoter and it is likely that he paired these two up in the tournament on purpose. Sexy Star has had issues with the Worldwide Underground, who screwed her out of her one-week long Lucha Underground Championship title reign. In fact, Sexy Star defeated PJ Black to earn the Lucha Underground Championship match in the first place. These episodes were taped months ago, which would explain why Black is in perfect health after just recently suffering from a base jumping accident.
Taya interferes and tries to give PJ Black brass knuckles. While Taya is distracting the referee, Sexy Star manages to get the knuckles for herself. By the time she swings at Black, however, the referee had turned around, so she gets disqualified. After the loss, she knocks the referee out with the knuckles as well. To continue the hype videos for Johnny Mundo’s Lucha Underground Championship title defense against Rey Mysterio, and this week’s video focuses on each competitor’s motivations. Mysterio wants to become the champion to bring prestige and honor back to the title to represent the underdogs in everyday battles. Mundo doesn’t care about what Mysterio has already accomplished; he believes that since he holds the title, he is the best.
Son of Havoc vs. Son of Madness – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This is the first time that Son of Madness is competing for Lucha Underground, and there is confusion amongst almost everybody. Madness looks like a bigger version Son of Havoc, and Havoc seems to know exactly who he is up against. Before Madness gets dow the steps, Havoc assaults his opponent who is also from “the open road.” Matt Striker makes a great point about madness: he could go from debuting in the Temple to main eventing Ultima Lucha Tres for the Lucha Underground Championship by succeeding in this tournament.
Son of Havoc attempts a Shooting Star Press, but Son of Madness rolls out of the way. Madness attempts a roll-up while using the tights for leverage, but Havoc counters into a roll-up of his own for the win. While Havoc celebrates, Madness attacks him. Madness then grabs Havoc’s biker vest (signifying that he’s no longer part of the group) and walks away. Winner: Son of Havoc | Eliminated: Son of Madness
Prince Puma vs. Ricky Mandel – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Ricky Mandel is known for being a huge fan of Johnny Mundo and when he comes to the ring, Melissa Santos announces that he is “interning” with the Worldwide Underground. Mandel comes to the ring as a Mundo knock-off, with the signature sunglasses, bandana, and entrance steam. Mandel cuts a promo on Puma before the match and Puma immediately hits him in the mouth with a bicycle kick.
Puma has the edge for the whole match, which to be fair, is not very long anyway. Instead of his signature 630 Splash, Puma shows a bit more aggression by finishing Mandel off with a spinning Michinoku Driver. Winner: Prince Puma | Eliminated: Ricky Mandel
Dante Fox vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr. (w/Rey Mysterio) – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This is a huge return for El Dragon Azteca Jr., and he comes back to in-ring action with his mentor at ringside. Azteca, also known as Rey Horus, was just announced as part of the PWG 2017 Battle of Los Angeles, so he is truly making a name for himself. Dante Fox is also very talented in his own right, and he brings an incredible high-flying ability to this match, which is the last one for this round of the Cueto Cup.
Azteca rolls to the apron to tell Rey Mysterio that he is injured, but the Worldwide Underground surrounds the ring and attacks Rey Mysterio. Azteca tries to stop the assault, but it just leads to Dante Fox getting the advantage for the win. Winner: Dante Fox | Eliminated: El Dragon Azteca Jr.
