The best golfers in the world will make their way to the Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina for this week’s US PGA Championship. The field for the fourth and final major tournament of the season is absolutely loaded as always and that made it a lot of fun to build a championship fantasy roster. Here is a look at the optimal lineup for this week’s DraftKings PGA fantasy competitions.
Rory McIlroy, $11,800
McIlroy should be a lock in almost every DraftKings lineup this week. After all, he is a two-time PGA Championship winner and he has absolutely dominated at this course throughout his career including two wins and six top-10 finishes in his seven starts at Quail Hollow. McIlroy also owns the course record with a 61 in 2015 when he won that year by seven strokes. There is no doubt that McIlroy has the talent to live up to his status as the sports betting favorite to win this event outright. While he is among the more expensive options on the board, he is definitely worth the price.
Hideki Matsuyama, $10,500
Matsuyama is our second pick at over $10K, which wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t so many quality value plays on the board for this week. Matsuyama is in excellent form heading in to this tournament after recording T-35th, T-37th and T-4th in his last three starts. He has also been excellent at Quail Hollow, where he has finished in the top-20 in each of his last two starts in the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy and Matsuyama will take up the bulk of our salary cap space. However, considering the quality sleeper plays available to us it makes sense to lock them in here at the start of our roster.
Kyle Stanley, $7,100
Stanley might not be a popular sleeper option this week but he has been very consistent all year and is available at an excellent price. Stanley has made the cut in 14 of his 17 starts this season and he should be in the mix when we reach the weekend action at Quail Hollow. The fact that he could fly under the radar means he will be an excellent contrarian play in DraftKings tournaments at the PGA Championship.
Tony Finau, $7,000
Finau has solid Driving Distance numbers and he will have the opportunity to showcase his power this week at Quail Hollow. He loves this course and he enters this week in excellent form. Finau has finished in the top-30 in each of his last five starts, including finishing 5th in the RBC Canadian Open and 27th at The Open in his last two outings. Prior to that, he also had a seventh-place finish at The Greenbrier Classic. He’s clearly working with some momentum going into this event, which is a good sign for our DFS lineup.
At just $7K, Finau is an excellent sleeper pick for this week. We’re not expecting him to win the PGA Championship but a Top 15 or Top 10 finish would do well for our team.
Zach Johnson, $6,800
Johnson is another golfer that has been playing at a high level entering this tournament. Johnson finished fifth in the John Deere Classic, 14th at The Open and then posted a runner-up finish at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in his last start. He has three Top 14 finishes over his last three starts, so it looks like he’s coming into this major with some momentum.
The fact that he is available at such a low price makes him an absolute steal in DraftKings competitions this week at the PGA Championship.
Adam Hadwin, $6,800
Hadwin rewarded us last week when we took a chance on him despite the fact that he had missed three straight cuts heading in to the WGC-Bridgstone Invitational. Hadwin seemed overdue for a strong performance and he certainly delivered when he placed fifth. Hadwin’s price tag hasn’t gone up this week, so we will take a chance on him again with the hope that he can build on last week’s result with another strong performance in the final major event of the season at the PGA Championship.
