ADCC 2017 Odds – Over 99KG Tournament – The ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships are this weekend in Helsinki, Finland and as always the best grapplers in the world today are gathered.
The word on the street is that this is the deepest heavyweight field ever in the history of the ADCC. It says a lot that Roberto Abreu, who swept the Absolutes in 2013 and competed in last year’s superfight against Andres Galvao is seeded at #5.
The 2015 winner was Orlando Sanchez of the United States and he is installed as the #1 seed heading into this year’s competition. Sanchez is a good human interest story with drug use in his history but the 5’9″ super heavyweight known as “The Cuban Tree Stump” has become a dominant grappler.
The tournament’s #2 seed is Marcus Almeida. “Buchecha” won the weight class in 2013 and he finished second in the Absolute tournament to Abreu so he is a dangerous fighter to add to the mix. Long known as one of the top grapplers in the Jiu-Jitsu world, he took some time off but has returned with a vengeance. A “Buchecha” versus Sanchez showdown has a lot of buzz around it if it happens.
The #3 seed is Vinny Magalhaes, who won the tournament back in 2011. Magalhaes fell to Sanchez in last year’s tournament during the semi-final round so he will be revenge-minded should he meet “The Stump” again.
American Jared Dopp holds the #4 seed and he may be ready to ascend. ADCC has been the home of explosive first appearances but many competitors have competed in one or even two world championships before breaking through. Dopp made his ADCC debut in 2013 with a strong fourth-place finish and he improved on that in 2015, finishing second to Sanchez.
The competition also has a nod to the old schools as Jeff Monson and Mario Rinaldi both return to ADCC. In the case of Monson, his history with ADCC is extremely long and he has several ADCC titles on his resume.The problem for Monson is that he is now in his mid-40s and he has been surpassed by a younger generation of fighters. Monson’s grappling style lends itself to the ADCC rule base but there is no denying that father time has slowed him down.
If Sanchez is the “Cuban Tree Stump,” then Rinaldi holds that designation for the previous generation. At 5’9 and 280 pounds, Rinaldi was known for doing back flips after his victories a decade ago. How much of that explosive athleticism is left after all these years remains to be seen.
