MLS Power Rankings For Round 30

MLS

The MLS campaign is winding to a close, and one team stands above the rest in the power rankings as the rest of the field tries to keep up. That team is Toronto FC, who through 31 games has compiled a whopping 62 points. They’re they only team in the MLS with more than 60 points to date and much of that has been due to their offense. They have 67 goals in 31 contests, which averages out to more than two per game. It’s hard to lose when you’re offense produces like that.

At any rate, here’s a look at the latest MLS power rankings based on the futures as set by the odds makers.

1. Toronto FC

Last Week: 1

MLS Cup Odds: +225

Toronto sits first in the Eastern Conference by seven points after a 2-1 loss to the New England Revolution as they got a goal from Nicolas Hasler, but their defense faltered again as Toronto has now allowed seven goals in their last two games. Toronto has to beware of taking their foot off the gas so that they don’t lose momentum going into the playoffs. They’ll host the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, and it’ll be interesting to see their lineup as they have been resting players with the top seed sewn up.

2. New York City FC

Last Week: 2

MLS Cup Odds: +800

NYCFC are second in the Eastern Conference and seven points behind Toronto FC after a 1-1 draw at home against the Houston Dynamo in which Maximiliano Moralez scored early, but NYCFC couldn’t hold the lead. Then they clinched their spot in the playoffs with a 1-0 on the road against the Montreal Impact in which Jack Harrison scored in the first half for the only goal of the game. NYCFC will play their third game in a week on the road against the Chicago Fire, and they’re only three points ahead of Atlanta United FC.

3. Vancouver Whitecaps

Last Week: 4

MLS Cup Odds: +800

The Whitecaps lead the Western Conference by a point after a 2-1 win at home against the Colorado Rapids thanks to goals from Fredy Montero and Yordy Reyna. However, the Whitecaps fell 3-0 on the road against the Seattle Sounders, and all losses are huge now as only nine points separate first from eighth place in the Western Conference. They’ll try to get back on track on Saturday away from home against Sporting Kansas City.

4. Sporting Kansas City

Last Week: 7

MLS Cup Odds: +800

Sporting Kansas City are third in the Western Conference and they’re one of three teams a point behind Vancouver, along with the Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders, after a 2-1 win at home over the LA Galaxy. Daniel Salloi and Diego Rubin scored for Sporting Kansas City, who also won the U.S. Open Cup, and they’ll play their fourth home game in a row on Saturday against the Whitecaps.

5. Atlanta United FC

Last Week: 6

MLS Cup Odds: +900

Atlanta are third in the Eastern Conference after a 2-0 win at home against Montreal as Hector Villalba and Jeff Larentowicz found the back of the net. Then Atlanta clinched their spot in the postseason thanks to a 3-0 home win over the Philadelphia Union as Julian Gressel, Josef Martinez and Jacob Peterson all scored for Atlanta, who haven’t allowed a goal in three games. They’ll head out on the road on Saturday to take on the New England Revolution.

6. Portland Timbers

Last Week: 5

MLS Cup Odds: +1000

Portland is second in the Western Conference after a 3-0 win at home over Orlando City SC, and they got a pair of goals from Diego Valeri, who scored one of his goals from the penalty spot. Darren Mattocks also scored for Portland, who will play their final away game of the season against the San Jose Earthquakes as they have their last two games at home, which could turn out to be huge.

7. Seattle Sounders

Last Week: 3

MLS Cup Odds: +1200

The Sounders are fourth in the Western Conference as they fell 2-0 at Real Salt Lake, but they bounced back nicely for an emphatic 3-0 win at home over Vancouver. Victor Rodriguez, Nicolas Lodeiro and Clint Dempsey all scored for the Sounders, who will visit the Philadelphia Union on Sunday for their final away game of the season; like their rivals from Portland, the Sounders will play their last two games of the season at home.

8. Chicago Fire

Last Week: 9

MLS Cup Odds: +1600

The Fire are fourth in the Eastern Conference following a pair of road games, the first of which they lost 3-1 against Philadelphia in which Luis Solignac could only manage a consolation goal. But Solignac was one of two players to score in the second half of a 4-1 win in San Jose against the Earthquakes as Nemanja Nikolic scored twice after halftime, and Djorde Mihailovic netted in the first half. The Fire will return home on Saturday to host New York City FC.

9. Columbus Crew

Last Week: 10

MLS Cup Odds: +1600

The Crew are fifth in the Eastern Conference after a huge 3-2 win at home over the New York Red Bulls as Jonathan Mensah, Justin Meram and Josh Williams all found the back of the net for Columbus. Those were three massive points for the Crew, who will play their final home game of the season on Saturday against D.C. United as they’ll be on the road for their final two games.

10. New York Red Bulls

Last Week: 8

MLS Cup Odds: +1600

The Red Bulls are sixth in the Eastern Conference, just four points ahead of Montreal after that loss in Columbus in which Bradley Wright-Phillips and Gonzalo Veron scored; the latter netted from the penalty spot. Veron put away another penalty against D.C. United, and Tyler Adams scored a pair of goals. However, they also were on the wrong end of an injury-time own goal and could only muster a 3-3 draw at home against D.C. United and it looks like the Red Bulls have a bit of a hangover after losing the U.S. Open Cup against Sporting Kansas City. They head on the road to take on Toronto FC on Saturday, and not only are Montreal on their heels, but New England and Orlando City SC are a point behind the Impact. This is the wrong time of the season for the Red Bulls to struggle.
