With four teams off in Week 6 and the injuries mounting up, the waiver wire can be a lifeline for many people at this point of the season. The wire is looking a little bare going into Week 6, but a there are enough options to help you if you have some of your best players on bye or you lost someone big, like Odell Beckham Jr., in Week 5. Here are the best players to add going into Week 6 of the NFL season.
Top Quarterback
Brian Hoyer – San Francisco 49ers
With bye weeks and injuries, the quarterback market is typically quite thin at this time of the year. For those needing a quarterback going into Week 6 the best option available may be Brian Hoyer. Hoyer is a boom-bust style of fantasy player. He could throw for 300+ yards and pass for few touchdowns, or he could throw for 150 yards and an interception. This week he faces Washington, a team his coach is familiar with and as well as not being known as a top-level defense. For spot start this week Hoyer is one of the best options you will find.
Top Running Back
Jerick McKinnon – Minnesota Vikings
Going into Week 5, it was difficult to determine which running back in Minnesota would take over lead duties after Dalvin Cook was lost for the season. After Week 5, it would seem as though the job is now Jerick McKinnon’s to lose. McKinnon looked great on Sunday, picking up 95 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 16 carries while adding another six catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. McKinnon should be a good back going forward, but there is a risk of him losing touchdowns in the red zone to Latavius Murray. Still, there is no better running back option available in most leagues, going into Week 6.
Top Wide Receiver
Nelson Agholor – Philadelphia Eagles
After two mediocre seasons to begin his career, Nelson Agholor is starting to turn into a good football player and a decent option in fantasy. Agholor has doubled his career touchdown total this season, from three to six, and should easily double his previous career high in yardage. Agholor is coming off a career-high 93 yards and is continuing to improve in stride with Carson Wentz. He can still be a little unpredictable, but with how good the Eagles offense has looked, he is starting to have more ups than downs.
Top Tight End
Ed Dickson – Carolina Panthers
After having a career day in Week 5, Ed Dickson is a smart add at the tight end position. Cam Newton seems to have shaken off the early season rust and now has the Panthers offense humming along nicely. A good tight end has always been critical for Newton and the Panthers success and with what Dickson did in Week 5, catching five passes for 175 yards, it is likely he continues to have a prominent role in the offense while Greg Olsen recovers from injury.
Top Defense
Atlanta Falcons
With the team just coming off their bye week, the Atlanta Falcons were likely dropped by many going into Week 5 and is available in the majority of leagues. The Falcons face the Miami Dolphins this week, a group that ranks last in the NFL in yards and points per game. Even without Vic Beasley, their best defensive player, the Falcons have enough talent to pressure Cutler, and generate some sacks or force him to make some foolish throws down the field.
Top Kicker
Harrison Butker – Kansas City Chiefs
Usually, when a new kicker comes in to replace someone else who is was injured or cut, you want to wait for a few games to see how they perform. After a few great games, including a stellar performance on Sunday Night Football, Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs is the best kicker to pick up going into Week 6. Butker made all five of his field goal attempts on Sunday and is now 8-9 for the season. As long as the Chiefs offense remains as good as it has been to start the season, Butker is not just a good waiver to add, but he is a must start at kicker.
