ARSENAL
The Gunners are looking to return to the winning ways after failing to record a victory in the previous two matches, and there is no better opportunity to do that than against the arch-rivals Tottenham. Arsenal is currently in the sixth position in the Premier League with four points behind Spurs and 12 behind the league leaders Man City. The Citizens were the latest team to beat Arsene Wenger’s side before the international break, as they won 3:1. Manchester City took a 2:0 lead through Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, while Arsenal pulled one back thanks to Alexandre Lacazette’s goal, but the Gunners were unable to make a comeback as Gabriel Jesus finished them in the 74th minute. Lacazette, who had troubles to score away from Emirates, now scored goals in consecutive road matches, and he also bagged a brace in an international friendly between Germany and France. The French striker is in a fine form and will undoubtedly be Wenger’s primary weapon in this London derby.
Arsenal played 18 games so far in the 2017/18, recording 12 wins, two draws, and four losses, with a goal difference of 33:21, which is precisely three goals per contest on average. The Gunners are fantastic at home at the moment as they won eight out of the nine matches at Emirates, only Crvena Zvezda managed to stay undefeated in a 0:0 clash in the Europa League earlier this month. When it comes to the Premier League Arsenal is the only team alongside Manchester United that has a 100% at home, winning all five games in this campaign. The Gunners scored 13 and conceded just four at Emirates, and have an excellent record against Spurs in front of their own fans, losing only once in the last 23 duels. That defeat came in 2010, so Arsenal is in a seven-game unbeaten streak in home encounters with Tottenham, and the visitors will have a lot to do to snap that negative record and come away with vital three points.
Alexandre Lacazette is the team’s top scorer with six goals in 12 appearances, while Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud, Sead Kolasinac, Aaron Ramsey, and Danny Welbeck are all behind Lacazette on a goal-scoring chart three goals apiece. Giroud and Walcott have been predominately used in the Europa League much more than in the Premier League, but even though Olivier is not in the first plan in the domestic league, he can be the joker and game-changer off the bench. Wenger will likely start with Lacazette up front, but there is no doubt Giroud will get a chance in the second half, especially if Arsenal is trailing. Granit Xhaka and Ramsey are the best assist-makers at the moment, recording four dishes to their respective names, while Alexis Sanchez and Sead Kolasinac are tracking them with three assists each. Sanchez is massively underperforming this season as it seems he doesn’t have enough motives to play for the Gunners, given that his current contract will expire in the summer. The same situation is with Mesut Ozil, but Wenger continues to field both of them in the starting lineup, despite growing displeasure from the fans. Arsene still cannot count on long-term absentees Santi Cazorla (plantar fascia), Danny Welbeck (groin strain), and Shkodran Mustafi (hamstring), while the backup goalkeeper David Ospina (groin) and Calum Chambers (hip) are listed as doubtful, but I don’t expect to see them on this one. The good news for Wenger is that some of these injured players will be back into the action by the end of November.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Spurs snapped a two-game losing run with a great win over Real Madrid in the Champions League that secured them a place in the knockout phase, and then beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Those three points put them in the third spot with 23 points, the same amount as Manchester United, but are eight points behind Manchester City, and this match will be a huge test for Tottenham in their quest for the title. Mauricio Pochettino’s side didn’t have an easy time against Crystal Palace and failed to score an early goal that would secure them a comfortable victory, but despite having some issues in front of the goal, the Korean international Heung-Min Son’s goal in the 64th minute was enough for a 1:0 win.
Tottenham played 17 games in this campaign, recording 11 wins, three draws, and three defeats, with a goal difference of 33:13, which is 2.70 goals per contest on average. Spurs are without a victory in the previous two away matches, having lost to Man United most recently, and another loss on Saturday could be devastating for Pochettino men. Tottenham didn’t lose to Arsenal in the last four H2H meetings, but they are failed to win at Emirates since 2010. Spurs have the best defense when it comes to Premier League road matches as they allowed just three goals in five outings, recording four wins and defeat. However, visiting Emirates and facing Arsenal is never easy for Tottenham, and this clash will maybe represent the most significant test for them so far in the league.
Harry Kane is the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals in 14 appearances, but he didn’t score in the previous four matches and skipped both of England’s friendly games with Germany and Brazil due to a hamstring injury. Kane missed those events to recover in time for Arsenal clash and he will probably be fit enough to start, as well as the team’s second top scorer Dele Alli, who was also withdrawn from the England squad to heal the hamstring injury. Alli scored seven goals thus far; Christian Eriksen has four goals to his name, while Son contributed with three goals. Eriksen has been phenomenal in Denmark’s 5:1 victory over Ireland, scoring a hat-trick to send his nation to the World Cup in Russia. Hugo Lloris sustained a groin injury, but it is not very serious, and he should be back in time to take his place at the goal on Saturday. Kieran Trippier is the most creative player with seven assists at the moment, while Eriksen with four and Kane with three are behind Trippier in that segment. Mauricio Pochettinowill be without the defender Toby Alderweireld (thigh), Erik Lamela (hip), and Victor Wanyama (knee), so the Argentinean manager will keep starting Davinson Sanchez alongside Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the defense, and Harry Winks in the middle of the park.
Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur – Match Prediction
Tottenham has one of the best defenses in the Premier League and scoring a goal against them is far from easy, but Arsenal has been excellent at Emirates this season, and I expect them to get one or two past Lloris. Also, I think Kane, Alli, and Eriksen can produce at least one, so I believe this encounter can produce minimum three goals.
MY PICK: Over 3 goals (+112)
