ESPANYOL
Espanyol suffered the second defeat in a row in the previous round of the Spanish La Liga when they lost to Valencia at home, 2:0. They were a better team in the first half when they’ve created a couple of excellent opportunities, but they just couldn’t find the net. The match started badly for the home team, as the striker Leo Baptistao suffered a muscle injury in the 15th minute, so the manager Quique Sanchez Flores had to make the first substitution. In the 23rd minute, Pablo Piatti had the first big chance of the game, but his left-foot shot went wide from a promising position inside the box. Seven minutes later Espanyol had their second big opportunity when David Lopez’s shot was well stopped by Valencia’s goalkeeper Neto.
Just two minutes after David Lopez’s shot, Espanyol had another great chance to take the lead, but Sergio Garcia’s left-foot shot wasn’t powerful enough to beat Neto, who had a tremendous day between the sticks. In the 36th minute, Gerard Moreno had a massive opportunity to break the deadlock when he hit the post from the edge of the six-yard box. Five minutes later, Espanyol hit the post again when the midfielder Sergi Darder took a beautiful strike just outside of the box, but he wasn’t lucky to get a goal. In the 62nd minute, Gerard Moreno had another opportunity to score, but this time Neto stopped his shot.
When one team miss a couple of great scoring opportunities, the other one usually finds the net. In the 67th minute of the game, Valencia took the lead after Geoffrey Kondogbia magnificent left-foot shot from about 25 yards. From this moment on, Espanyol’s game falls apart, and they couldn’t come back after Kondogbia’s shocking strike. In the 83rd minute, Espanyol’s captain Victor Sanchez made a huge mistake inside the box which led to Valencia’s second goal. He wanted to return the ball to his goalkeeper, but instead, he just made an assist for Santi Mina who easily found the net to secure the victory.
After the first twelve rounds of the Spanish La Liga Espanyol is sitting at the 14th spot of the table with 13 points, a 9:15 goal difference, and a 3-4-5 record. They won just one game in the previous six rounds, along with two draws and three losses. At home, they have earned 10 points with a 7:5 goal difference and a 3-1-2 record, while on the road they are still without a win recording three draws and three defeats with a terrible 2:10 goal difference. The last six Espanyol’s matches had under 2.5 goals scored in total, while Espanyol bagged just three out of their nine goals in the first 45 minutes.
The 25-year old striker Gerard Moreno was pretty unlucky to find the net against Valencia, but he’s still the team’s leading scorer with four goals in 12 appearances this season. The 25-year old forward Leo Baptistao bagged three goals in 12 matches so far, adding two assists to his name. Leo Baptistao is the team’s best assist-maker along with an experienced attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado. The winger Pablo Piatti, who arrived from Valencia this summer, is a huge disappointment so far, as he scored just one goal in 11 appearances, also adding one assist to his name.
The manager Quique Sanchez Flores will probably miss Leo Baptistao (muscle injury) for the next match against Getafe, while all other players are healthy and ready to go.
GETAFE
The Deep Blues are in a good form in the last couple of weeks, as they are unbeaten for four games in a row. The last time they lost the match was against Real Madrid at home, 2:1, in the eighth round of the Spanish La Liga. In the previous round, Getafe hammered Alaves, 4:1, in front of the home fans. They made a storming start and took the lead after just six minutes of play when Markel Bergara scored in a bizarre fashion. His header was saved, but the ball hit him again to finish behind the keeper. Just three minutes later it was 2:0 when Jorge Molina converted the penalty kick.
Getafe continued with the attacking football in the second half, and just eight minutes after the break they scored the third goal. Francisco Portillo took a beautiful through ball to find Angel Rodriguez, who dribbled past Alexis and calmly put the ball behind the keeper’s back. Eleven minutes later, Angel Rodriguez got the brace with a phenomenal right-foot shot from the edge of the box, and it was the end of the road for the visitors who managed to score the consolation goal in the 81st minute.
After the first twelve rounds of the Spanish La Liga Getafe is in the 11th spot of the table with 16 points, a 19:14 goal difference, and a 4-4-4 record. They have recorded three victories and three losses in front of the home fans with a 12:7 goal difference, while on the road they have earned seven points with a 1-4-1 record and a 7:7 goal difference. In each of their last ten games, The Deep Blues have found the net, while they have conceded at least a goal in the previous six matches.
The 30-year old striker Angel Rodriguez, who arrived this summer from Real Zaragoza, is the team’s leading scorer with six goals in eight appearances this season, while the experienced striker Jorge Molina bagged four goals in 12 matches so far, adding two dishes to his name. The defensive midfielder Markel Bergara, who’s playing on loan from Real Sociedad, scored three goals in 12 appearances thus far. Jorge Molina, Francisco Portillo, and Faycal Fajr are the best assist-makers with two dishes each.
The manager Jose Bordalas is still without the winger Dani Pacheco (shoulder injury), while the midfielder Gaku Shibasaki is still suffering from a foot injury, and he’s doubtful for the next match. All other players are healthy and ready to go.
ESPANYOL vs. GETAFE – Match Prediction
Espanyol needs to repeat the performance from the previous round, while they have to be more accurate in the final third if they want to beat Getafe. The visitors are playing pretty well recently, and they certainly can get something from this game, but I think Espanyol will get a win here, as they just have to start collecting some points.
MY PICK: Espanyol to Win (+120)
