Pacquiao vs Matthysse Odds – This coming July 15th sees Manny Pacquaio facing Lucas Martin Matthysse in exotic Kuala Lumpur with the WBA world welterweight title on the line. Matthysse grabbed the vacant WBA belt at 147 pounds in his last outing when he stopped previously unbeaten Tewa Kiram of Thailand. Pacquiao lost his WBO world belt in his last outing when he was decisioned by Jeff Horn in Australia so the legendary Pac-man is looking to grab another world title in this one.
The bottom line is that Pacquaio and Matthysse are both at the point in their careers where they need to avoid the top level welterweights. A match-up with Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr or Keith Thurman would likely not end well.
But against each other, both Pacquiao and Matthysse are matched pretty even and the first lines at the books have Pacquiao a slight favorite.
Pacquiao dropped his WBO belt to Horn in July of 2017, so it has been a year since we have seen him, and he is now 39 years old. That is a weird fight to judge Pac-man on, but judge we must. Horn returned in December for a successful title defense against Gary Corcoran, but he is entering a June 9th fight with Terence Crawford as a major underdog.
Pacquiao feels he did enough to win “Down Under” and that he was robbed by the judges, while Horn has not been shy about promoting himself as a “legend killer.” We will find out more about Horn against Crawford.
For his part, Matthysse returned after a nearly two year layoff to compete at welterweight and he finally made good and won a world title against Kiram this past January. For the hard working veteran, it was the not just the fulfillment of a dream it also fulfilled the expectations of his native Argentina.
As soon as he won the world title some in the boxing media immediately pinpointed Paquaio as Matthysse next opponent. The fight is going down in Malaysia as Pacquiao logs another leg of his farewell world tour in an international location. Whoever Pac-man pulled in as a dance partner was going to be looking at a nice pay day and that is what Matthysse was looking for.
Matthysse should be the younger, hungrier fighter. Pacquiao is training for this on in the Philippines, avoiding the trip to Los Angeles and eschewing long time trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao’s senatorial duties alone keep his attention divided while Matthysse is now in thinking, sleeping and dreaming of Pac-man 24./7. Matthysse is a headhunter and Pacquaio has been hurt in the past so Matthysse is going to have a gunner’s chance throughout the fight. The question will be how much firepower Pac-man has left and what will Matthysse have to sustain in order to get his punches off.
Right now, the fight is not officially announced to air in the United States, but you can expect that we will see some version on American television. The announced undercard features a lot of local south east Assian talent and does not currently have any big names to join Pac-man and Matthysse on the marquee.
