No one in the country has had a better opening to the season than Monmouth’s star guard Justin Robinson.
Through six games, he’s averaging 24.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, three steals, and 3.2 assists per game, all while shooting 47-percent both from the field and beyond the arc. Oh, and he’s 5’8”, doing all of this against the likes of UCLA, USC (twice), Notre Dame, Drexel, and Dayton.
The third year guard for the Hawks is having a career year and, along with his team’s bench celebrations, is the talk of the country at the moment. But it begs the question, is this more than just a ridiculously hot start?
Monmouth still has a non-conference matchup with Georgetown to get through, but then it’s on to MAAC play, where it’s tough to assume that they won’t be feeling more than confident about their chances on any given night. For teams like this, if they can get some early season momentum going against some of the big boys, there’s no telling what can be done when conference play rolls around.
The same can be said for a player like Robinson. Sure, teams will know he’s coming, but he was a double-digit scorer a year ago as well. He doesn’t have to average what he’s putting up right now, but I’d double down on any chance I had to buy stock in him right now. The kid is a difference maker with his ability to split the defense and knock down shots from deep.
Something like that doesn’t change over night, and he’s already proven himself more than capable.
