Adam Gase Joins Bears as Offensive Coordinator

In Chicago, new offensive coordinator Adam Gase inherits an offense loaded with playmakers.

Just two days after being passed over for the Denver Broncos head coaching job, Adam Gase will join his boss John Fox as the new offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Gase was a bandied-about name among many teams’ coaching search, not only as an offensive coordinator but as a head coaching candidate.

Gase was pursued by other teams right down to the wire, with St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher reportedly making multiple attempts to contact him Tuesday and Wednesday before he agreed to a three-year deal with the Bears.

Under Gase, the Broncos set a new NFL scoring record in 2013 with 606 points and an NFL record 76 touchdowns. Last season, the Broncos were No. 2 in the league with 482 points, still the 25th highest total in NFL history.

This will be the second offensive coordinator job for Gase, who has only been calling plays since 2013. Before that he was a position coach with the Broncos, coaching wide receivers, and quarterbacks before being promoted in 2013. Gase began his NFL coaching career as a scouting assistant for the Detroit Lions in 2003.

While the drop-off from Peyton Manning running Gase’s offense to Chicago’s Jay Cutler may seem extreme, it’s worth noting that the Bears had one of the top scoring offenses in the league in 2013. The Bears are loaded on offense, with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery at wide receiver, Matt Forte at running back and the underrated Martellus Bennett at tight end.

Mornhinweg will coach quarterbacks for Ravens

After spending two seasons as the New York Jets offensive coordinator, former Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg will coach quarterbacks for the Ravens. It’s a surprising demotion for the long-time offensive coordinator, who hasn’t officially been a position coach since 1996 with the Green Bay Packers.

Before his two seasons with the Jets, Mornhinweg was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2003-2012, first as a senior assistant, then assistant head coach and finally as offensive coordinator from 2006-12. Mornhinweg was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers under Steve Mariucci from 1997-2000.
