ADCC 2017 Galvao vs Calasans Odds – Helsinki, Finland is set to host the latest edition of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club’s Submission Wrestling World Championships this coming September 23rd and 24th. For the second ADCC world championships in a row, superfight champion Andres Galvao will defend his title, this time against BJJ black belt Claudio Calasans.
Galvao is now 35 years old and he is considered one of the greatest competitors of all times in the grappling world. A big part of that has been his record with the ADCC competition, where he won his weight class and the open-weight class tournament in 2011. That feat set him up to face Braulio Estima in the 2013 superfight and he won that match-up to become the superfight champion. In 2015 he faced heavyweight horse Roberto Abreu and he won a 6-0 points decision to retain his superfight title.
Calasans won his weight class (under 88KG) and the open weight tournament at the 2015 ADCC competition to get here. He has a judo background and he has been cramming his jiu-jitsu and submission resume for the last seven or so years. Winning the weight class and the open tourney at the ADCC is no small feat. Galvao has done it and, in the past, fighters such as Mario Sperry and Mark Kerr have pulled off the feat, but it is rare.
One thing to be aware of is that the history and pedigree between these two jiu-jitsu black belts are deep. Both men can trace their lineage back to Oswaldo Alves and the two have worked together as part of the same team for years. The ADCC has struggled at times during it’s history with teammates competing against each other at less than 100 percent. The prestige around the superfight title and the prize money that comes with it should be enough to prevent any funny business, but it should be known before the match that the two share a common background.
The question then becomes has Galvao’s time come? He has been on top of the game for the last half a decade and very little really divides the top competitors. Calasansin has been a rising force now for several years and his upward trajectory is either going to jump another level or get shut down, depending on whether he can beat Galvao.
Galvao’s legacy is set in terms of modern day submission grappling. Remember Galvao had a short MMA career before retiring in 2010 to concentrate on submission only. That dedication has seen him carry the torch as the best in the world for a long time. Will that torch be passed at the end of September?
Several other superfights have been announced for the ADCC 2017. The Galvao vs Calasansin bout is the event’s true superfight as Galvao holds the coveted title, but nostalgia fights Chael Sonnen vs Leo Vieira and Sanae Kikuta vs Renzo Gracie are also set for the final day of the competition.
