The university announced Tuesday that Colgate men’s basketball coach Matt Langel has agreed to a contract extension through 2030. Langel led the Raiders to their third 20-win season in four years, as well as their third Patriot League regular-season and tournament titles. Colgate defeated Navy in the Patriot League Tournament to win a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. The Raiders were seeded 14th in the Midwest Region, but they were defeated 67-60 by Wisconsin in the first round, dropping their record to 23-12.Langel, the Patriot League’s coach of the year three times, has 176 victories since taking over in 2011. “Our program’s objective from the start has been to position ourselves to compete for championships on a consistent basis,” Langel said in a statement. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished here.”In 2020-21, the Raiders set a program record by winning 15 straight games and matching the Patriot League record for conference victories in a season (16). They were also second in the US in 3-point field goal percentage (40.4 percent), fifth in assists (598), sixth in total 3-point field goal attempts (347), and eighth in assists per game (17.1). Langel is one of 20 finalists for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award, which is given to the outstanding Division I mid-major coach in college basketball each year.
