Alexander vs Castillo Boxing Odds – This Tuesday night in Florida sees the return of Devon Alexander as he faces veteran Walter Castillo in the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports 1.
Devon Alexander has a chance to write a nice story for himself and for boxing, and this is a sport where heart warmers do not crop up that often. Alexander is returning at 30 years old after a layoff of more than two years that saw him battle injury and pain killer addiction. Always a nice guy, Alexander has a lot of people rooting for him to do well in his comeback.
Before the time off, Alexander was 26-4 and his move to the welterweight division came after a world title reign at light welterweight. At 147 pounds his record was 1-3, but with losses to Shawn Porter, Amir Khan and slugger Aaron Martinez, he has mixed it up with some of the best names in the division. At 140 pounds he has wins over tough fighters Marcos Maidana, Lucas Martin Matthysse, Randall Bailey and Jesus Soto Karass. His lone loss at 140 pounds came at the hands of Timothy Bradley, a world champion in his own right.
Castillo is the right kind of veteran to test Alexander. The rugged Nicaraguan is 26-4-1 overall, and he has some international experience. His most recent outings saw him facing contenders such as Amir Imam and Sergey Lipinets. Castillo is also fighting after more than a year off as we last saw him against Lipinets in July of 2016.
Alexander will enter the fight a comfortable favorite. Alexander is the better fighter of the two unless he has slipped during his layoff. That is improbable, as Alexander appears to have taken all the right steps leading to his return. He has chosen to return at welterweight, which means Alexander will face some of the same questions about size that he was facing before his layoff. Skill-wise he can take his chances with top fighters, but will he be undersized against the likes of Keith Thurman and Errol Spence? He wont look small against Castillo, who has also fought at 140 lbs, but the size difference with the division’s champions will be ample.
If Alexander loses to Castillo his run as a viable contender is likely over. A win however could have the effect of propelling him into big fights, so this weekend’s fight is worth watching. If Alexander can put on a highlight reel performance he will be a player very quickly. Alexander’s comeback seems to be about getting back to the top rather than grabbing paychecks so he may face some high expectations with future matchmakers,
