The day after the tragic death of Tyler Skaggs, the schedule dictated that it was time for the Angels to go back to work. They did, beating the Rangers 9-4 in a game that allowed the players to forget momentarily the uncertainty and confusion surrounding their friend — and to find a way to honor him. Same goes for Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin, who was good friends with Skaggs and took his turn to pitch with Washington in what turned out to be a 3-2 win against the Marlins. Meanwhile, Skaggs’ cause of death won’t be ready till October. Elsewhere, John Sterling will miss his first Yankees game in decades and MLB upheld Manny Machado’s suspension.
Skaggs’ teammates made it clear they were playing for him, not just Tuesday night, but for the rest of the season.

It will take three months for medical examiners to determine a cause of death.
Though the time to finalize the autopsy report might appear lengthy, it’s not unusual in my experience. The report on the death of former USC football player Kevin Ellison in L.A. last year, for example, took about 3.5 months because of toxicology testing.

John Sterling has broadcasted every Yankees game since 1989, a streak that will end Thursday as he takes some rest from illness.

Remember the back-and-forth over Manny Machado’s suspension over conduct with an umpire? Ultimately, the league decided to keep the ban at one game, which Machado served Tuesday night.
