BAYERN MUNICH

Bayern Munich is already through to the next round of the UEFA Champions League, as they’ve secured the second spot in Group B, but if they want to finish at the top of the table, they will have to beat PSG on Tuesday with at least four-goal margin. It sounds like a little too much for The Bavarians, especially after the first match at Parc des Princes when they were easily beaten by PSG, 3:0. However, football is a game where you don’t want to write-off Germans, and Bayern Munich will certainly try to defeat PSG in front of the home fans.

The Bavarians had a slow start of the season, but since Jupp Heynckes took the helm, it seems like Bayern Munich’s form is constantly improving. In the previous ten games in all competitions, The Bavarians were beaten only once (against Borussia Monchengladbach two weeks ago, 2:1), recording eight victories in the process along with one draw against RB Leipzig when they’ve won on penalties. Their attacking play is working quite well, while on the other side there are certain problems at the back, as The Bavarians managed to keep the clean sheet just once in the previous six matches in all competitions.

Bayern Munich is topping the Bundesliga table after the first 14 rounds with 32 points, a 34:11 goal difference, and a 10-2-2 record. They were excellent on the home soil, recording six wins and one draw with a 22:4 goal difference, while on the road The Bavarians were decent for their standards recording four victories, one draw, and two losses with a 12:7 goal difference. At Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich has won five matches in a row in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and conceding just one in a return. In the previous round of the German Bundesliga Bayern Munich has beaten Hannover at home, 3:1, but their defensive work looked pretty flimsy, particularly in the first 45 minutes when they conceded a goal along with an unconverted penalty kick for the visitors.

The 29-year old Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is in a terrific form this season, and he is Bayern Munich’s top scorer with 19 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions, while the 21-year old winger Kingsley Coman and a 30-year old versatile midfielder Arturo Vidal bagged four goals each. The legendary winger Arjen Robben scored three goals in 18 matches this season, adding four assists to his name, while the 28-year old forward Thomas Muller is struggling to find his top form, bagging two goals and five assists in 15 appearances thus far. The 22-year old right-back Joshua Kimmich is the team’s best assist-maker with nine dishes in 22 games, also adding three goals to his name.

The manager Jupp Heynckes is still without his best goalkeeper as Manuel Neuer will be sidelined for at least three months. The midfielder Thiago Alcantara (muscle injury) will miss the next match with PSG, while Arjen Robben (muscle fibre) and the left-back Juan Bernat (wound) are both listed as doubtful.

PSG

The Parisians suffered their first defeat of the season on last Saturday when they lost 2:1 to Strasbourg on the road in the 16th round of the French Ligue 1. It was a huge upset for PSG’s fans who thought their beloved club is invincible, as PSG recorded 19 victories and just two draws before they met Strasbourg. PSG had a ball on their feet for 73% of the time, taking 29 shots toward Strasbourg’s goalkeeper, but they ruined a lot of excellent goal scoring opportunities, especially Javier Pastore and Angel Di Maria. On the other side, PSG’s defense had a really bad day in the office, allowing Strasbourg’s players to run behind their back, and to score a couple of beautiful goals. They have conceded five goals in the previous five games, showing they are vulnerable at the back.

After the first defeat of the season The Parisians will face their arguably toughest challenge of the season so far, as they will travel to Allianz Arena to meet Bayern Munich in the sixth round of the UEFA Champions League Group B. PSG is topping the Group B table currently with five victories out of five matches, and a magnificent 24:1 goal difference. If they want to stay at the top of the table, they will need to avoid a four-goal margin defeat, and from this point of view, it sounds quite reasonable. PSG will certainly try to score a couple of goals against The Bavarians, as their attack is much better than their defense, so the defensive approach could be suicidal for The Parisians. They were a better team in their first encounter at Parc des Princes, dominating throughout the match, and there is no reason to change the approach in this one.

The Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is a real scoring machine this season with 23 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions, bagging six goals in five Champions League matches so far. The Brazilian star Neymar scored 15 goals in 16 appearances, while the striker Kylian Mbappe bagged 7 goals in 15 matches thus far. Neymar is PSG’s leading assist-maker with 11 dishes, Mbappe made six, while the winger Julian Draxler assisted for five goals so far. The 34-year old full-back Dani Alves also have five dishes on his account along with three goals in 16 matches this season.

The manager Unai Emery is surely upset after the team’s first defeat of the season, and particularly because of their poor defensive job, which will be unacceptable against mighty Bayern Munich side. He can field his best eleven at Allianz Arena, as there are no injury worries among the squad, besides the experienced midfielder Thiago Motta who is sidelined due to a meniscus injury.

BAYERN MUNICH vs. PSG – Match Prediction

Both teams are so dangerous in the front, so I believe they will combine at least four goals in this one. Bayern Munich will have to attack if they want to reach the top of the table, and they could open some space for dangerous counter-attacks.

MY PICK: Over 3 Goals (-115)
