Best Returnees to College Basketball

The deadline to officially withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to college basketball has passed, with the actual draft just around the corner. While some big names remained in the draft, others made use of the NCAA policy introduced this offseason.

Who are the top returners to college basketball? Well, we’re so glad that you asked.

  1. Melo Trimble, MarylandNo one in college basketball suffered a bigger drop in stock from game one to the final whistle of their season. Trimble went from being a guy people thought could be the best point guard in America, to someone who was so inconsistent and erratic that come NBA Draft time, he wasn’t even factoring into the second round for many folks. Good for him to make the decision to return and prove that he can once again lead a team. Good for Maryland, because without him, they wouldn’t have been a factor in the Big Ten.
  2. Nigel Hayes, Wisconsin–Hayes was thrust into the spotlight with UW’s departures after their appearance in the title game, but didn’t prove that he was ready to carry the load for the Badgers. As a senior, he’ll have a chance to play for perhaps the best team in the conference, and once again he’ll have the chance to prove his doubters wrong. This was the best decision for everyone involved.
  3. Ivan Rabb, California–How can a projected Lottery pick not be ranked as the best returner? Because Rabb still has a lot to prove to CBB fans, despite the fact that he projected as a very solid NBA prospect. With so much firepower leaving Berkeley, we’re waiting to see whether or not Rabb can almost single-handedly carry the Bears next season. His usage should be up substantially from his first season.
  4. Allonzo Trier, Arizona–Trier wasn’t considered a great NBA prospect, but the thinking was that he’d shown all he could at ‘Zona and was ready for the next step. However, he disagreed. His return gives Sean Miller the kind of offensive weapon he’s yet to have during his time in Tucson and should keep UA in the minds of folks picking the Pac-12.
  5. Dillon Brooks, Oregon–Brooks’ return takes Oregon from a really good, but not elite team next season to one that could conceivably contend for the national title. It isn’t just his skill set that sets the tone for the Ducks, it is his motor and energy. There might not be a more intense player in the country next season.
