Team Canada Survives, Ottawa Names a New Coach, and More

We have a few days to rest and get our affairs in order before the Stanley Cup Finals get underway on May 27, so it’s time to focus on other storylines not involving the Boston Bruins or the St. Louis Blues. The 2019 IIHF World Championships are in the knockout rounds, and the Ottawa Senators have hired a new head coach. Let’s take a look at those stories and some others below.

Damon Severson scored with 0.4 seconds on the clock to save Team Canada from another early exit at the IIHF World Championships at the hands of Switzerland. Mark Stone continued his impressive run by scoring the game-winner in overtime, and Canada is now awaiting its semifinal opponent.

Team USA wasn’t as fortunate, as the Americans lost to No. 1 overall seed Russia 4-3 earlier in the day. Patrick Kane and Jack Hughes tallied two assists apiece for Team USA, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the upset.

After a protracted coaching search, the Ottawa Senators have tabbed former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant DJ Smith to be their new head coach. Ottawa was the worst team in the NHL last season, and the Senators won’t have their first-round pick in this year’s NHL Draft to help turn things around after dealing it to Colorado for Matt Duchene two seasons ago.

It’s going to be an interesting offseason for the San Jose Sharks. The organization is certainly bummed after having its Stanley Cup hopes derailed by injuries, and the front office will have some tough decisions to make over the summer.
