Boxing Podcast: Former World Champion Montell Griffin Sheds Light On His Storied Career, Today’s Boxing World

Former WBC World Light Heavyweight champion Montell Griffin returns to the Talk ‘n’ Shoot podcast to complete our interview.  During Griffin’s first guest appearance, we went in depth into his youth and into his amateur boxing career.  Griffin gave us a fascinating look at amateur boxing, and the podcast culminated with him taking us through his 1992 Barcelona Olympic experience.

As a professional, Griffin would meet two sure fire future Hall of Famers in James Toney and Roy Jones Jr, and despite a lifetime 3-1 record against that pair of greats, it was Griffin whose career seemed to face road blaocks to big fights.  Roy Jones Jr was disqualified in the ninth round of a razor close bout with Griffin the first time they met, yet almost all of the criticism around the incident was directed at Griffin.  In addition, the powers that be, HBO and the WBC all forced Griffin into a rematch as the business worked desperately to restore Jones to the detriment of Griffin.   Despite that, and the myriad of similar boxing stories that end in tragedy, Griffin remains engaging and is rarely bitter.

Griffin has also been invited back to talk boxing, as his knowledge and background in the amateur game gives him a wealth of knowledge about Cuban boxing, including boxers such as Theophilo Stephenson.  Griffin also spent a lot of time in his youth reviewing tapes of old greats, so be on the lookout for more Talk ‘n’ Shoot Podcasts featuring Montell Griffin.
