This Saturday, September 27th in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Former WBA Super World Welterweight title holder Ricardo Mayorga returns to boxing after a three and a half year absence when he faces journeyman Allen Medina (9-23). Mayorga was last seen in a boxing ring back in March of 2011, when he had a credible performance against Miguel Cotto.
The match is scheduled for eight rounds, and is likely the soon to be 41-year-old Mayorga’s last attempt at a comeback. Mayorga at his best was a handful for anyone, as he used to bring a primal ferocity that was hard to match. Unfortunately, toward the end of that last run, Mayorga had let that ferocity turn him into a caricature. He was famously involved in a cross over to MMA where he was scheduled to face veteran Din Thomas, but the show was cancelled when Mayorga’s contract with Don King came into play. He went on to fight Cotto after that match, but since then things have been down hill.
Mayorga fought four MMA fights in 2013, going 0-3 with one non-contest. He has come in over weight by 20 pounds and been suspended by the people that run MMA in Nicaragua. His match in Costa Rica, which resulted in a 1- minute loss reportedly featured Mayorga almost being arrested after the fight, only escaping after fleeing through a bathroom window. Despite this, he should be fine based on his pedigree against Medina, who is fighting in his first 8 round bout.
Also in an eight round comeback fight is former WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter, who is looking to bounce back after two consecutive losses. He is facing (12-3-1) Ron Aubrey, who has been KO’d or KO’d his opponents in every fight he has had except the draw. He is a big man who has been within 20 pounds of 300 lbs for the last four or five years, but he has never faced anyone with the experience level that Peter has.
The Mayorga fight is scheduled for the Middleweight division, and it will be interesting to see if Mayorga has anything left in the tank. Of the two making a comeback, it is Peter who probably has an easier climb back to relevance, but it all begins this weekend.
