The best golfers in the world will make the trip to Miami, Florida this week for the first World Golf Championship event of the season in the Cadillac Championship. The TPC Blue Monster at Trump National Doral is a fitting setting for this week, especially with a ton of money up for grabs in DraftKings PGA fantasy tournaments. The PGA $400K Miami Classic is the headline event for this week with $400K in prizes up for grabs, but that isn’t the only option fans have as they try to make some serious cash. Here is a look at our optimal lineup for this week’s DraftKings PGA tournaments.
Bubba Watson, $11,400
We have no problem spending big on a superstar option, but the bottom line is that Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth have really struggled at times early on this season and that leaves Watson as arguably the best option for us to build our lineup around. Conquering the Blue Monster is all about length and Watson is one of the best long hitters on the PGA Tour. He also has a strong resume at this course as he has finished T-2 and T-3 in his last two appearances here. Watson will be rested and focused after taking a week off and he should have the confidence and momentum on his side after winning two weeks ago at Riviera.
J.B. Holmes, $9,400
There is a little bit of a drop in the price of the players we have targeted after Holmes, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t among the best options available. Holmes is another golfer with the perfect style for this tournament and he proved it here a year ago when he opened the Cadillac Championship with a 62. A 75 in the final round forced him to settle for a runner-up finish, but if he should be confident that he can finish the job this time around. Holmes is coming off four straight top-12 finishes so he is in excellent form heading in to this week.
Patrick Reed, $9,100
The fact that we can get the 2014 winner Reed at such a reasonable price makes him an excellent value play for this week. Reed finished T-23 here last year, but he has proven he has what it takes to win this tournament and he should be motivated to contend. A missed cut last week at The Honda Classic wasn’t pretty, but he did record a T-6 the previous week at Pebble Beach and posted a solo second at Kapalua before that. They might not be the most expensive options on the board, but Watson, Holmes and Reed are a formidable top-three unit as any heading in to this event.
Robert Streb, $6,800
There is a noticeable lack of options that we feel comfortable gambling on in the middle tier and the fact that there are a handful of sleeper options available at under $7K allowed us to spend big on Watson, Holmes and Reed. The most expensive of that trio is Streb, who has three top-40 finishes in his last four events including a T-26 in The Honda Classic. Streb played well in last year’s Cadillac Championship with the exception of a terrible 80 in the second round that really cost him and if he can avoid that one terrible round this year he should have a strong performance.
Jamie Donaldson, $6,700
Donaldson is another intriguing option at under $7K after posting a T-26 at The Honda Classic last week. He has some decent power and his history at this course makes him worth taking a chance on as a sleeper pick. Donaldson registered a T-2 behind Reed in this event two years ago and if he can find that magic again then his production will really exceed his price tag this week.
Kristoffer Broberg, $6,300
This will be Broberg’s first event of the season on American soil, but he is coming off two top-25 finishes in his last three European Tour events and he isn’t far removed from his first European Tour win at the BMW Masters last fall. The fact that there is no cut makes him that much more attractive as a sleeper option with high upside. Broberg’s $6.3K price tag allowed us to spend big on Watson and if he delivers a strong performance than he will be one of the biggest reasons we win some serious cash in DraftKings tournaments for the Cadillac Championship.
