Callum Smith vs Erik Skoglund Odds – Saturday, September 16th sees the Echo Arena in Liverpool host Callum Smith vs Erik Skoglund to open the WBSS 168 pound tournament. It is a battle of undefeated fighters as Smith puts his 22-0 record on the line against the 26-0 Skoglund.
The World Boxing Super Series is kicking off the quarter finals of their eight man, single elimination tournament in the super middleweight division in Liverpool with the hometown fighter Callum Smith a major favorite to advance. Smith’s story about being one of four brothers who all fight at a high level have made him a star in his hometown and the fact is that Callum may be the most talented of the fighting quartet, which also includes active boxers Liam, Paul and Stephen. Smith has been facing expectations about winning a world title and his participation in this tournament is seen as a coming out party.
Should Smith advance, several all-British superfights in the tournament could develop as fellow countrymen George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr are both top four seeds in the tournament field. Looking past the relatively unsung Skoglund is one of the major bugaboos for Smith heading into this fight. Despite that, the shadow of a Smith vs Eubank Jr or Smith vs Groves match-up is a mouthwatering proposition for British boxing fans and means a big money fight for Smith.
But Skoglund will come in upset minded and looking to make a name for himself. The general concensus is that the talented Skoglund has fought his entire career in Denmark and Sweden, which are not exactly boxing hotbeds, and that this is his first fight at the world class level. Critics of Smith point to hs resume as crowded with British fighters, but the level in the U.K. is considered far above that of Denmark and Sweden. Skoglund has a long road ahead of him if he gets past Smith.
The live event at the Echo Arena is promoted by Sauerland Events and has eight fights in all on the schedule. A pair of ten round super middleweight bouts appear in support of the main event, and the Martin Murray (35-4-1) vs Arman Torosyan (18-3-1) 10 round bout is already getting attention at the sports books.
Undefeated Zach Parker (12-0) takes on veteran Luke Blackledge (23-4-2) in the second 10 round super middleweight bout that could still get a line at the books as well. The rest of the card consists of bouts of 4, 6 and 8 rounds. The main events are set to air on ITV4 in the United Kingdom, check your local listings for start times.
October 7th sees the tournament continue with quarterfinal action as Chris Eubank Jr takes on Avni Yilidrim in Germany. October 14th sees George Groves taking on fellow Brit Jamie Cox in London. The fourth quarterfinal match sees American Rob Brant take on Germany’s Jergen Brahmer but that fight is yet to be scheduled.
