Canelo vs Smith Odds – This Saturday, September 17th at the massive AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, HBO PPV presents Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Liam “Beefy” Smith for the WBO world super welterweight title.
Alvarez is the biggest draw in boxing, having inherited the spot from Floyd Mayweather Jr and then Manny Pacquiao. At 47-1-1, he has won world titles in two weight classes and here he is looking to win another belt at 154 lbs. Smith won the WBO world title back in October of last year, and he has been a fighting champion, already logging two successful title defenses. Nothing on his resume is of the scope or magnitude of this weekend’s fight, as he is fighting outside of England for the first time and he is going to Cowboys Stadium to do it. It seems like a lot of pressure, and in Alvarez, he is facing a fighter who is on almost all the pound for pound lists. Alvarez has been fighting at a top level for several years now, while Smith’s resume is built up on more regional competition. You get the picture here, Alvarez is cashing a payday against a lesser opponent. But Alvarez will carry a lot of pressure being the “A” heading into the fight, and he does not have an obvious next” opponent if he continues to pass on Gennady Golovkin.
The main issue is that Golden Boy and Canelo have possibly mishandled their star power for this fight. His last match earlier this year against Amir Khan drew about 660,000 PPVs and that is the highest number this year. That is very much lower than the numbers Mayweather used to pull, and expecting Canelo to reach those numbers is not realistic. But with Smith being a limited draw on the world stage, Alvarez will be hard pressed to get more than the 660k buys he got in his last outing. Smith will have a couple of thousand people max who travel to England but that number will be lost in the stadium. How full will the stadium be? It can probably be configured to seat more than 80,000 for a boxing event and it will be interesting to see how many people attend the live event.
The undercard for this fight lost the intriguing heavyweight fight between Luis Ortiz and Alexander Ustinov. Ortiz was granted a release from his Golden Boy contract and the fight fell apart, leaving an undercard generally considered lukewarm. Aside from the middleweight bout between Willie Monroe Jr and Gabriel Rosado that was bumped to co-main event, all of the other lines indicate mismatches and fighters being showcased.
