Powell was shot in the face while sitting in a car with some friends outside his home around 8″36 p.m. according to the Toledo Police. Witnesses reported that the shots came from a gold-colored car with three masked men inside. As of this morning, no arrests have been made.
“We are aware that Damond Powell was the victim of a shooting last night in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized,” the Cardinals said in a statement. “We have been in communication with his family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.”
The 22-year-old Powell was an undrafted rookie out of the University of Iowa. Powell wasn’t especially productive in the Hawkeyes’ offense last year, catching just 32 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns, but the Cardinals obviously saw enough in his physical skills to invite him to camp. With the start of Arizona’s training camp barely a week away, his long odds to make the final roster just got longer.

Powell is the second NFL player injured in a shooting this offseason. Former Tennessee Titans and New York Jets running back Chris Johnson was shot in Florida in March. Johnson’s injuries were also not life-threatening.
