Carolina Panthers News: QB Cam Newton Ruled Out for Week 4

Cam Newton's not done yet.

Without question, injury is part of life in the NFL for a football player. Equally important, a player is always just one good game from losing his job to a replacement in a results business like ‘the league’. Now, Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton has been ruled out for week four action after missing Sunday’s 38-20 win in Arizona.

This news comes official from the Charlotte Observer’s Bill Voth. Of course, the news running parallel to the Panthers being in no hurry to get Newton back on the field is the player who replaced him as signal-caller against the Cardinals. That player is second year quarterback Kyle Allen, who attended college at Houston.

First, Carolina head coach Ron Rivera talked about why Newton is ruled out so quickly for week four against the formidable Houston Texans.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot,” coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. “We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return. At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle as our starter.”

Indeed, the Panthers could be in ‘wait and see’ mode with Allen due to the way he performed on Sunday. Moreover, he put together a historic performance that ranks amongst the best days a player at the position has ever had for Carolina.

Without question, a passer rating of 144.4 is something; but throwing for four touchdowns to go alongside no interceptions is even more incredible. What’s more, only seven balls of the 26 thrown by Allen touched the ground all day long as he out-shined first overall pick Kyler Murray of Arizona.

Now, if Allen has another game like his first of 2019; don’t be surprised to see the Panthers to give Newton a little more recovery time.

Consider that Newton won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award following the 2015 season when he took the Panthers to the Super Bowl. Following that season, he signed a five-year $103 million-dollar contract extension that only runs through next season. Beginning the 2019 season with two clunker games that result in a QB rating of 71 has pundits asking if the star’s performance can match his contract number.

Now, the Panthers may have a cheaper option that position that forces their hand or provides an option to change gears. All of this due to a little injury titled as a ‘mild left foot sprain’. Life comes at you fast, especially in the NFL.
