According to a source close to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue will join the Los Angeles Clippers staff and will work under Doc Rivers as his top assistant.

Lue was a leading candidate to become the new Los Angeles Lakers head coach, but negotiations broke down last month, and the Lakers hired Frank Vogel instead. Lue had a desire to team up with LeBron James again after the two of them won the NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. However, he and the Lakers could not agree on contract terms.
Lue coached Cleveland Cavaliers between 2015 and 2018, leading them to three consecutive NBA finals appearances, and winning the title in 2016. He experienced a disastrous start of the previous campaign, suffering six straight defeats to open the season, after which the Cavaliers fired him.
Lue began his coaching career as Rivers’ assistant with the Boston Celtics from 2011 to 2013, and then with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2013-14 season before he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers. In three and a half seasons with the Cavs, Lue had a 128-83 record and will always be remembered as the first coach who brought a NBA title to the city.
