A couple of teams that prefer to run the football, Coach Shawn Elliott and the Georgia State Panthers are getting 3.5 points when they take on their conference counterpart Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to Parker H. Petit Field at Georgia State Stadium. The afternoon game will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET and fans can watch the action on ESPN+.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview
Georgia State enters this SBC game as the underdog and is currently getting 3.5 points. The Chanticleers are also receiving -175 moneyline odds while the Panthers are +155. Vegas has placed the over/under (O/U) at 58.5 points, and if one team gets out in front early, it’ll probably create a reasonable in-game betting opportunity.
The Chanticleers are 4-3 against the spread (ATS) and have gained 1.4 units so far. The team has recorded an O/U mark of 3-3. The Panthers are down 0.1 units this season. The team is 2-4-1 ATS and also has an even O/U record of 3-3.
The Chanticleers are 4-3 straight up (SU), including 1-2 SU against SBC opponents. The Panthers are 2-5 SU overall and are also 1-2 SU in conference play.
The Chanticleers are coming off a resounding 24-13 win over Massachusetts last week where the Chanticleers completed 9-of-18 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Kilton Anderson went four-for-10 for 112 yards while Fred Payton completed five-of-seven for 107 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Marcus Outlow (91 rushing yards on 17 attempts, one TD) and Torrance Marable (80 yards on 13 carries) led the ground attack while Malcolm Williams (four receptions, 153 yards, one TD) and Ky’Jon Tyler (one catch, 10 yards) handled the receiving duties in the win.
One week ago, Arkansas State knocked off this Georgia State team by a score of 51-35. As a group, the team collectively completed 20-of-33 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns. Dan Ellington went 15-for-26 for 250 yards and three touchdowns while Aaron Winchester was five-of-seven for 49 yards and one touchdown. Ellington (52 yards on 18 rush attempts) and Tra Barnett (61 yards on 13 carries, one TD) handled the running game while Penny Hart (four receptions, 58 yards) and Barnett (three catches, 14 yards) led the Georgia State pass-catchers in the loss.
Coastal Carolina’s run the ball on 71.9 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Georgia State has an overall rush percentage of 56.6 percent. The Chanticleers have produced 252 rush yards per game (including 243 per game against Sun Belt opponents) and have 16 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Panthers are putting up 145 rush yards per game (182 in conference) and have 11 total rushing TDs.
The Chanticleers offense has averaged 181 yards through the air overall (175 per game against conference opposition) and has 12 passing scores so far. The Panthers have put up 229 pass yards per contest (250.0 in the SBC) and have nine total pass TDs.
Defensively, Coastal Carolina seems to have the upper hand in both facets. The team has let opponents run for an average of 209 yards and pass for 229 yards per game. The Georgia State defense has given up 248.7 yards per game to opposing passers and 248.3 yards per game to opposing runners. The Chanticleers are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of 7.61 to opposing QBs, while the Panthers have given up a staggering 8.75 ANY/A.
Offensively, Payton is up to 107 passing yards on the year. He’s completed 71 percent of his 7 attempts with two scores through the air and one interception. He has a pristine 14.57 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 13.60 over the last two outings.
The Chanticleers will probably try to control tempo by feeding their running backs early and often. In addition to receiver Malcolm Williams (398 receiving yards and three touchdowns), Marcus Outlow (520 rush yards, seven rush TDs) and Torrance Marable (388 rush yards, five rush TDs, two receiving TDs) have been significant focal points in the Coastal Carolina offensive scheme.
Dan Ellington has completed 99-of-155 passes for 1,202 yards, seven TDs and two INTs for Georgia State. His ANY/A stands at 6.66 for the year and 8.67 over his last two outings.
The Panthers also like to keep their backfield involved. In addition to Penny Hart (325 receiving yards, one receiving TD), Dan Ellington (263 rush yards, four rush TDs) and Tra Barnett (192 rush yards, two rush TDs) have gotten a lot of touches recently.
When these two teams met last year, Georgia State knocked Coastal Carolina off by a pair of field goals 27-21.
